Just picked up a 1980 FLH. First bike was an '80 FLT. Been missing tinkering on its and it sound. Not currently running, but I'll get that righted shortly.
6'9" Yup...you got me beat, I'm at 6'5"....recently snagged the Mustang Wide Regal Duke for mine...which added some height and let my legs feel not so cramped. See you have a Mustang too.
My FLH"S" has the factory forward controls....but they're not enough forward for me....will be moving 2" forward soon as I stumble across a good kit. Wanna find forward floorboards...but "forward" floorboards appear to be a rare beast.
+2 forward controls are already on the shopping list.....I think the fender will be hitting my toes in turns. Never liked "up" seats....Ordered a Lepera cobra to let me push back more. Have a set of 16" in my attic that will be going on as well.
A little research around the bike and the coil does not have power going from one side to the other. 12V from the supply when grounded though. So there is one good reason I am not getting spark. Bike also has the OEM electronic ignition with the ignitor module in front by the voltage regulator. I ordered a Dyna-S ignition to put on. This way the new coil will match the ignition to eliminate other potential problems. Ordered all my fitment parts (seat, +2 forward controls) and I had a set of 16" Carlini Gangster Apes in my attic. They have a curve to them
And for 16" bars they are shorter then many other bar that are labeled 16". I think they look good without being ridiculous.
Couple other note worthy changes that will be made are the addition of a kicker, but at the same time the mechanical clutch lever will go away and the clutch will be hydraulic. And I am upgrading the hand controls with switches and housings similar to those on my 2005 FLHRCI. While I am awaiting Brown Box Santa I need to take a link or two out of the chain because if the axle tensioners are not fully maxed I would be surprised, but there is not way there is enough travel to take up the chains current slack. I am also going to change the rear blinker bar to something narrower so it doesn't get walked into in a parking lot. The speedo was missing its grommet and I also picked up some new rubbers for the speedo mounts as the existing have seen a much better day. Also picked up some exhaust gaskets because the pipes are a little loose and the gaskets look to be compromised.
Lots to do, but I feel better going for the first ride once I feel I have covered all potential risks.
I have my Winnebago bike. It's been to Wyoming and back and nearly as far in Canada, a few ironbutts and 1500 miles in 30 hours, but your right not something this FLH will be intended for. Wind in my face and smile ear to ear is its purpose.....as for a big whale....nothing I sit on will ever look like that with me on it LMAO...
