I ended up using the easy clutch adjusting method- when i was doing it by the book it said not to torque the adjuster screw but just lightly seat it, well i must have a thread thats a little messed up because i can keep screwing it in pretty far past the hard spot before it seats.
So instead of backing it out 1/2 to full turn mine was more like 1 1/2- 2 turns.
