When I got home from a ride last week, I noticed one of my tail lights was burnt out. I went about getting a replacement and when I plugged it in and tested the lights, blinker and brakes, I noticed that the brake lights didn't come on for either front or back brakes. After playing with them a while one of the new tail lights burned out. Then I realized the brake lights were locked ON.
The blinkers both function perfectly, and I've checked the two plugs under the seat. Neither the front nor back brake is locked in such a way that would cause it not to move completed to the undepressed position when not engaged.
Has anyone had this problem and what else can I check?
Before you pull it apart, peer up behind brake lever. With a small light, you will be able to see if the end of the switch is broken. Off if I am thinking correct is in, so if it looks broken, push it in and light should go off. Could be the hydraulic one is stuck on. To check it, just pull one wire off switch (in brake line just in front of rear wheel)

RipSaw - you were correct, it was the microswitch. when I adjusted the grip, it then depressed the switch and turned off the brake lights. But now the running lights don't come on. They worked fine at first, but when I put the lens covers back on, they stopped. They flash when I turn the bike on but then go out. Turn signals work, and break lights work and the bulbs are new and not burned out. What did I break?
Also, now my readout is showing "Low Range" though I've got almost a full tank. Man, I put a Gardian Bell on it just last week. I think it had the reverse effect. haha
Are you talking about rear. Only running on front and signal from two element bulbs. The rear are signal (single element bulb) Can be made signal/brake with red lens (if original were yellow) and a diode brake/signal run modal that piggy backs into line at rear fender under seat usually. (were mine is) Did you unhook battery? Know this affects my trip mileage.
