I have a real thin hard film on my windshield. Doesn't wash off but I can scrape it off with my fingernail. Where did it come from and how can I get rid of it.
Thanks, blessings, 'J'ene 04 Heritage Softail Classic
I believe that is a protective coating and should not be removed. I just wipe my shield with a damp microfiber cloth before each ride. I guess that could be machine polished off if you wanted.
The HD shields come with that coating, and if you use the wrong product (ie Windex) to clean the shield it'll start coming off. I searched years ago for a way to remove it and cleaners and even acetone and was not successful. One guy said he power washed his off but I didn't try that.
I bought a new shield on eBay for $90 or something like that. Since then, I've bought a Clearview shield and it's a lot better quality than the HD shield or Ebay shield and they offer 10% off for HD forum members. I'd recommend them, their thick shields are excellent and have no coating so you can use Windex and RainX if you want to.

Interesting. I have a HD windshield and use windex on it all the time and have not had any issues.

I have had HD Windshields on both my bikes. One clear and one smoked. I have used pressure washer on them, windex and scratch X. I have never had any coating peal or scrape off.
