I have an '05 Screamin Eagle 103B with a CV carb and the only upgrades so far are air (Heavy Breather) and V&H's. I have decided to make a change to a polished Mikuni. I can get a 45mm now, polished 42's are on back order with no projected availability date. I am having yet another round of carb issues and am ready to make the change asap.
I have read conflicting views...some saying 45 is great for this motor, some saying I will lose low-end, around town performance (mainly torque) and that the 42 would be better (would I really notice a difference?).
I would do a 42. I'd only do a 45 if your valves and head were modified to support the larger flow, higher compression, bigger cams etc. Too big of a carb will indeed kill your performance and gas mileage. JMHO.
Member opinions aside, you should call Hillside Cycle and ask them- They are good guys and will typically help a brother out with a quick tech question. This would be a good "no questions" source of info.
BTW there are a lot of Mikuni HSR 42's on ebay right now (I just looked)- About $500 for a polished unit. Or buy one not-polished for a lot less and have a local polisher put a shine on it for $50.

The 42 with minor adjustments should be perfect. You may have to increase the idle jet one or two sizes. You can pick up Jets through JP Cycles. Additionally I recommend Not using the Harley CV Choke. Use the Mikuni choke also available from JP.
Have you thought about a Woods carb? On their website they claim better fuel mileage with increased hp. Just a thought.
I agree 100%. Tell woods what all has been done to your motor and get a woods cv carb made to your motor. By the way what carb troubles are you having?
