Default Picked Up A New (old) Bike

Over the weekend, I sold my 2013 Blackline in order to downgrade to something with less technology. I found a 2001 Fat Boy FLSTF that should offer many buid/upgrade avenues in the future. Coming from the Blackline, the possibilities for a Fat Boy seem limitless. What I'm most excited about is the carb, fat front tire and solid wheels, and the fact that I lifted the seat to find 2 harneses, rather than the snake pit of wiring and harnesses under the Blacklines seat. I feel like I've got a bike that's simple to maintain and can last for a very long time.

Any advice on things I should replace on a 14 year old bike with 21,000 miles? The bike appears to be well kept, but I don't mind some "just in case" maintenance items for peace of mind. It's got brand new tires and a fresh oild change, already.

Thanks.

First - find a painter

Here is what I'd check:

Fluids if they haven't been changed in a while.

Flush and bleed the brakes. Be sure to check the rubber part of the brake lines for dry rot or cracking

Check Brake Pads

Pull the Cam Cover and check the tensioners. Great time to add a nice set of cams.

Listen for valve train noise. If there is excessive noise, it might need a set of lifters.

Wheel bearings. Can't remember if it was 2000 or 2002 when HD went to sealed bearings (pretty sure it was 2000). If they aren't sealed bearings, then repack and install new seals.

Tires - make sure they aren't old and dry rotted

Check the tension on the drive belt - the tool is only $15

Check the tension on the primary chain - it's a manual adjustment.

Good luck!

Yes, the color is a bit loud. The air cleaner cover and struts aren't things I would have painted.

Thanks for the list of things to check!

Besides the struts, ac cover, and dash cover I actually dig the color.
