Default Starter Question - 2011 FB Lo

So, I'm out riding the other day and it got pretty hot out...about 90 degrees. After a couple hours riding, we were getting pretty warm so we decided to stop for a bit. We pulled off in a shady area to just relax for a bit and cool off. We sat for about 30 mins, and decided to move on. When I thumbed the button, the starter really struggled the turn the bike over.

The bike was hot, but didn't seem excessively so. We had been riding for a few miles, but not riding hard. Was mostly just backroad two lanes through the woods. I'm wondering if my starter is starting to go bad, or if it's just my battery starting to lay down.

Any thoughts? FWIW, its a stock, 2011 96".

Load testing the battery is where I would start, typically a life span of a battery is 3-5 years. I'm sure there are some exceptions to this out there.

Stupid question, but was it in gear when you cranked it? I gave up starting in gear because there is too much drag on the starter and it's worse when it hot..

Yes, load test the battery first off, then the starter.

Yes, load test the battery first, but don`t condemn the starter...

Starters are almost never the problem, it is almost always a problem of the starter not getting enough current.

Clean all battery cable connections, at the battery, starter solenoid, frame ground.

Reinstall the battery if it passes load test, or a new battery if needed, and give it a try, let us know the results.

If the problem still exists, there are electrical checks that can be done to find the problem, don`t troubleshoot by buying parts.

A few simple electrical checks will find where the problem is.

Check all of the battery cables to make sure they are tight. Especially the frame side of the ground.

To be honest, I don't remember if it was or not. I'd be inclined to think it was, since I just stopped on the side of the road in some shade...but can't say for sure.

Thanks for the replies everybody. Going to check out the battery and cables when I get a chance. I'm thinking it's more than likely the battery. I just bought the bike last summer, and the stealership said they were going to put a new battery in it before I took it off the floor. As shocking as it may sound, I'm beginning to think they may have lied to me (can you sense the sarcasm LOL )
