91 springer starter to test out
For quite a while now my springer makes a rapid clicking sound when I first hit the starter button,as though the battery was low .By holding the button in it takes a half a second and the noise stops and it doesn't make any noise then immediatley it cranks over good and starts ..It's not on a compression stroke all the time so I don't think thats part of the problem..The battery check out 100 percent. I just reset the timming today ,it was off a little but the clicking is still there when the bikes cold .. Out came the HD manual ,it said to check the relay before checking the starter ,I located the relay riveted to the rear lower plastic part of the fender .to check the relay I would have to remove the rear wheel or oil tank or the starter ..ha . I can't get my had in to touch the relay and it's riveted in place even if I could ..So I figure I'm going to take the starter out ,and with it out of the way I can get at the relay ,then I can check everything at the same time..The book says remove primary cover ,then loosen the oil tank so it can move a little then remove rear exhaust and slide the starter out the rh side ..There are several different tests to check out the starter ..no problem once it's out ..BUT it sure doesn't look like its going to come out that easy ..I'm thinking I will have to remove the oil tank to get at the starter mounting bolts ..
Can anyone tell me if this is the case ? I don't mind doing all this but if theres a trick or 2 I'd like to hear about it ..Thanks
