So I'm looking at an 04 Softail Standard this week for my uncle who is out of state. We've both had a few bikes. I've had ultras dynas and a road king. Do all of my own maintenance. Anything special to look for on a softail. Neither of us has ever ridden/owned one. It has ~8000 miles on it. Twin cam 88 with a 5 speed right?
With only 8000 miles on it, just look at it as any other used vehicle. Signs of abuse, neglect, or disrepair. I've had mine for almost 6 years and have had no troubles.
Yes, it'll be a twin cam and 5 spd.
power train wise just check what'd you check on any other HD. I'm not aware of any softail specific stuff to check. I've had 2 an both have been great. As with any TC the cam chain tension pads an inner cam bearings are a concern eventually.
My 02 SS is the most solid HD I've ever owned. Carbed with a Super E, starts first crank, gear cams, fast off the line, sounds bad ***, runs like a champ.
My '04 Fatboy has been super reliable. I can't think of anything in particular to watch for.
At 8K its been run less than 1K per year; I would flush & change all fluids and check tire age.
I would echo the part about the cam chain tensioners. Eventually that will be a problem to address. Probably wouldn't hurt to ask if they've been checked/changed. I would think the owner would know. My bike went 36000 miles before I switched to geared cams and the tensioners were almost shot. My father in law has 45000 on his and hasn't replaced his, so I guess there's no great estimate in when to replace. I was glad that I caught mine before they shredded my oil pump.

Well I bought it. It was in pretty good shape, a little dusty from sitting neglected in the garage but started right up and rode fine. Best part.......$5200 cash!
