Default Talk to me about performance mods

Ok guys I just bought my first Harley. 06 softail standard, 88" FI, 5 speed, 8800 miles, tons of chrome, drag bars, nice chrome wheels. It has vance and hines pipes and a power commander 3. It pulls fairly hard but I know it could be better. Im pretty sure the powercommander 3 is old technology but im not too sure. Im wanting to unleash as much power as I can without going internal just yet. So how much more power can I get out of this Fuel Injected 88", and whats the best way to do it? Any certain intake that's better than others? What programmer? Any help is appreciated.

Congrats on the new bike.

You just bought your first Harley. A great looking bike with a ton of mods done to it including pipes and fuel management (tuner). Without having ridden the bike a lot (cause you just bought it) you admit it's pulling strong....but the first thing you ask for is the maximum power possible

Do you think you bought what you'be been looking for?

LOL, Thanks for the replies. Yes I bought what I was looking for. Im no stranger to performance bikes as I came up on sport bikes. All im wanting to know is how much power can be squeezed out of this 88 FI and the best way to do it. The only real experience I have with Harleys performance is on my brother in laws 80" softail, so yeah compared to his this one pulls pretty hard.

You could take it up to 100" without splitting the cases, pick a set of cams that will make the power where you want it and have the heads done to match the cams. Add a larger throttle body and you could very easily see 100/110 hp and torque.

Or, a pipe change to a 2-1, a better flowing air cleaner and a proper dyno tune will yield the most power out of your stock engine.

My '05 softail is now sitting at 117" mated to a Baker OD6 transmission. You can go as mild or as wild as you want! My dyno chart below.

Thanks for your input. I def plan on a better free flowing intake, but im just not sure which one. Are there some better than others for performance? Also why do you say go with a 2to1 exhaust? Thanks.

My experience is save your coin and plan on doing the internals and externals at the same time. The thought of doing a little at a time often times is wasted money because what you did when it was an 88" will not support the 98" you'll want to turn it into. I don't know, or want to know, how much money I've wasted on cams and intakes and other gimics that didn't do a whole bunch and when I took the big step those parts were a penny on the dollar boat anchors. Harley makes a good aircleaner that will draw enough air for a 88 or 98. I use the forward facing one with the cone filter and it works well on my 107 and also gives me more leg room. Generally the 2 into 1 pipe makes more power because it helps scavenge the exhaust pulses. It's all I've used in various forms sense I stepped up from Shovelheads. I've a RB racing 2 into 1 on my 124 Fatboy and a Bassanti RoadRage on my 107 Crossbones.

Good info. Thanks alot. You don't by any chance have a picture of the forward facing intake you have? I am having to sort of bend my leg around the factory one to use the rear brake.

My 100% stock sportbike is faster, better handling and cost less than my 124" Harley.

Better performance gains are had by using the money from the Harley upgrades and buying a used 250cc sportbike.

How is a stock bike faster than a 124" bike?
