HJC's are great helmets and don't cost you an arm and a leg. I think all, or maybe most are both DOT and SNELL approved. I don't have anything against Arai, Shoei or other super expensive helmets but they do not necessarily protect you any more than a good quality $150-$200 helmet. The helmet snobs like to think they do, but tests have proven that in many cases they don't.

I wanted to add that if maximum peripheral vision is very important to you Nexx Helmets probably have the best peripheral vision of them all, but like Aria and Shoei, they're pricey and I don't think worth the money. Sometimes you can find them on clearance for about 3 bills. That said, I'm perfectly happy with the peripheral vision I get from my HJC AC12 (which they don't make anymore) and CL17. Good luck.

It's not all about the "end game" (crash protection) it's a lot to do with the fitment of the helmet itself. Typically the mid to upper range helmets you'll find more features ie, more than one shell size instead of a one size fits all.Better interior features/materials like self wicking/quick drying fabric, and removable/interchangeable cheek pads and better chin straps. Wind noise also plays a big role on a helmet purchase for some. A good place to start is here.

Yes, HJC are good, and like Jekyll said, most of them are both Snell and DOT approved. Many other full-face are not.

Most helmets pass the DOT standard test, but not all pass the Snell standard test.

To look up whether your helmet is Snell approved, you can check it here :
http://www.smf.org/cert
http://www.smf.org/

On DOT vs Snell :

"The United States utilizes two standard rating systems to help you distinguish between helmet specifications, the DOT (Department of Transportation) standard, and the Snell standard (private firm). The Snell standard is a much tougher standard and involves a standard impact replication test with two strikes to the exact same spot."

I just ordered the HJC FG-17 last night which is DOT and Snell certified. My Suomy was done. Fit is the biggest thing. Make sure it fits! I do like that HJC has different shells for different sizes. Coming from a road racing background I always ran Arai and Suomy but so many buddies liked the HJC. But make sure to try the helmet on first. Different shaped heads fit different helmets.

I have a Bell DLX that i wear for my daily commute, a little loud but comfortable as all hell.
my only issue with it is that it fits my head so well i can't wear my script glasses with it.

I also have a bell rogue that I'll wear if i go out on a joy ride.

I've been wearing a FF for nine years and in the beginning it seemed my vision was compromised and the wind pushed my head around. I think your neck muscles get stronger and it gets much easier in time. I have a Shoei I bought in 2008 and it works very well for me in all regards.

Modular and will never go back to anything else. It was my wife that led me to the change she got one . One day on vacation I used it for a quick ride to the store.
You may think you have a lost of peripheral vision, but that is all in your head. With the right Modular .
That was it I was sold.
HJC are fine for most. You do not need to send $600 for a great helmet .

I have a Shoei GT and wouldn't trade it for anything. I just picked up a matching one for my girlfriend off eBay for about ˝ off. Mine is the same as the snell approved except it has the tinted flip down visor/glasses thing so its not "technically snell approved" since they aren't able to do so with the flip down. If you have the cash i recommend you go for the best helmet you can get, you won't regret it.
