Default Help Identifying a Fastener!

Hey All!

I bought a 1996 Fatboy and I am trying to strip it down to start cleaning and preservation. I went to take the engine guard off and ran into a fastener I have never seen before. Please let me know what you think and how i should remove it. I tried my crescent but couldn't get a turn on it. Thanks!!

No idea what it is....but I would try a towel wrapped large vise grip on the "flats" part of that....

Looks like a bolt cover to me as well ... try prying on the bottom edge and see if it pops off ... and once you get it off let us know what it is

I would think there is a nut or bolt head behind the frame bracket that pulls the bullet shape part tight to the bracket

^This.

Looks like some sort of locking mechanism anchor point. That indention on the side of the fastener is for a bolt or pin to slide through in order to lock whatever is attached to it to stay in place without walking forward or backward.

If I had to venture a guess, it's either a mounting point for some sort of weird steering stabilizer set up or even a sidecar mount. I'd scour the bike to see if there are any other attachment points which might give you a clue as to what it actually is.

But, just like Just Enough said, there must be a nut and washer on the back side of that thing.

Good luck.

Hey all!

Thanks for all the info. There is a bolt head on the other side of the frame but I couldn't get to it with the bike on the ground. When the little ones go down for a nap I'm gonna put it op on my lift and give it a shot. I did think it might just be a cover so I tried to pry it off but no luck. I will keep you guys updated. Thanks again! New to the forum and it seems like an amazing resource! Cheers!
Joe

Default Solution!

Jm35ny was right. After I read his post I remembered a lock I saw in the big box o' stuff the previous owner gifted me. Sure enough there it was and it all looked to go together. The bitch of it was that with the engine guard bars installed, it was impossible to stow the lock on it. It was threaded onto the bolt and when I rotated the bolt it rotated as well. I soaked the whole setup in B'laster and kept working on it tell it all came off. Thanks for all the input.
