Hey guys... I'm very new to my 2007 softail and Harleys in general. I did try searching but didn't come up with anything... I'm going down the bagger path and wondered if I replace the factory exhaust with something aftermarket to accommodate more bag options, will that change the engine dynamics enough that I need to get it retuned?
wow! someone else from Billings! welcome and hello
ive been told with just a change in muffler, probly don't need a tune BUT.....if you do pipes AND hi flow air cleaner, you will. most bikes will run better and cooler with a tune anyway, as lean as they come from the factory.
Check the Vance and Hines FP3 if you want to keep it simple and flexible, Power commander is also a way to go, these will help even on a stock bike. There are many more out there but these I have personally used and know they work well. Good luck and be safe. Welcome to the forum.
There is a wealth of information, and opinion, in the Dyno tuning forum about tuners ...have a read there before buying
different exhaust and different baffles and will you be removing a Cat, do make a difference but how much will depend on what you have engine wise on the bike just now, to what you are thinking of changing it to. Possibly best to factor in a tuner if you are going from stock
If you change your pipes and air intake, I would get at least the stage 1 flash to the ECM. I think having it tuned is not necessary. (If they still do stage I flash on the newer bikes) My local dealership told me for a mild stage 1 upgrade they will usually steer people towards the VH fuel pack with a canned map and not the TTS with a full tune. A stock 95cui motor with a pipe and air box upgrade will produce good numbers with a good tune.
And if you are going to go with a cam in the future consider how the components will work together so your not buying things twice. A 2 into 1 pipe is always a good choice. Will scavenge more exhaust and give you better low end torque.
Just for an example, I have a strong running 107 and access to a well respected dyno tuner. After swapping from one popular 2 :1 to another 2:1 it took almost a full tuning session on the dyno to dial it in properly from 1 pipe to the other.
A perfecty running engine is worth that expense to me.
