THAT DID NOT WORK! It would only give you a full on crank for about 10 seconds, if the bike didn't start 1st time around you were screwed! As a matter of fact this is exactly why I'm posting my experience! Don't get stuck leaving your prized possession on the side of the road.
Cranking for 10 seconds doesnt sound right. I havent had any issues with batteries other than age. I put mines on a tender if the bike is gonna sit for more than a week. Other than that, starts right up with 1-2 cranks running at 200ccp with compression releases.
a lot of the V rod guys run them an I haven't heard of one exploding...the battery on the V rod is right behind the steering neck so it up high an knocking 10 pounds off that is noticeable. I've had good luck with the Gel batteries myself.
Can't say I have either. Lithiums explode from lack of reinforcement (cheap quality.) One as big as a motorcycle battery would be a small bomb. I can't imagine anyone stupid enough to try building one without the proper reinforcement.
Then again, it would be my luck to get a defective one that has a meltdown in my garage on a tender. Between lead and gels, there are plenty of other options that my bad luck can't turn catastrophic.
Most modern motorcycle Lithium batteries are Lifepo4 ( Lithium Iron Phosphate ) which are safer than Lithium-Ion and in "theory" do not explode.. LOL.. I have been using Antigravity Batteries for a couple years now.. super light and powerful.. the main issue is that you CANNOT let it completely discharge.. it will damage the battery.. These Lifepo4 are a lot more expensive.. but if battery compartment space is limited (my case) then there is no other choice.. That was my only reason to go with Lifepo4 ... Look into Earthx batteries.. their website states that the battery has a Management system that disconnects the battery before it gets completely discharged in order to avoid damage (parasitic loads common in Harleys.. like Alarms... and even with no alarms or other third party accessories the Harleys are constantly drawing a very small amount of current.. so, if you store the bike or are unable to ride the bike for a couple months You better disconnect the Lithium battery before it gets damaged)
Next time I need a Lifepo4 I will probably switch to EarthX for that Management protection system alone.. one more note.. These Lifepo4 batteries can only be charged with certain types of chargers.. I use OptiMATE TM-291 which adds another $120 to the equation..
