Mark the position of the lever on the shaft before you remove it. That way you'll know how far to move it.

I tried adjusting mine on the spikes and it too much so adjusting the shift rod gives finer adjustment.

I have a Heritage with floor boards. I took a heavy pair of boots out to the bike, and removed the front lever. I placed the boot on the board, and then slipped the lever on the shaft to give 3/4" - 1" of space between the top of the boot and the lever.

Does adjusting the rod do anything to lessen the throw between gears?

Not much but do an experiment and find out. Measure the foot travel and throw with the rod both long and short and report back. There's your answer.

I use combination of lever position and rod lenght especially if I coudnt find position in the middle. Rod has plenty of thread on it to allow for quite an adjustment on both ends. Piece of cake.
