Here I am again, debating which model softail I want to get. I have ordered a '08Softail Custom (Through military sales) but I am really getting the bug for the Deuce. I have had this problem for awhile. On the one hand, the custom is such a classic to my eyes. Because it is a classic, it looks like a million other harleys. The Deuce is unique. It is different from anything else out there. There is, I believe, something to be said for different. I do have a bit of a problem with that rear fender - just like alot of people - but it is the only thing keeping me from loving the Deuce completely. Being that this will be the last year of the Deuce (It, and the wide glide, will be replaced by Harley's purpose-built chopper: The FXCW Rocker.) I reckon that 2007 Deuces are something special: The only year with the 96" and six-speed. It will be kind of nice to have a bike that unique.
The other thing is that I am a pretty tall guy - 6'4" - so I want a bike which fits me best from the get-go. I know I can get extensions and thinner seats, but I would rather start off with something that fits me decently. From what I can tell, the Deuce has a stretched frame. I assume this because thewheelbase is longer, the tank is longer and the fork rake is the same as other FX softails. My question is whether or not this equates to more legroom. Any advice you tall Deuce riders can give would be greatly appreciated.
I am 6'3" and have a deuce, I rode it for about a year before I put 3" extended forward controls on.I did not have a problem with the controls, my biggest problem was the stock badlander seat. I could only last about 45-60 minutes before my back started to kill me. If you can stand the seat, the forward control will be no problem. Now that I have the 3" extended forward control, I could never go back.
Here are a couple of photos that show my leg position with the 3" extended controls.
Hope this helps.
Slam it 2 inches, whack on some T bars and extend the forward controls on thedeuce and I'll guarantee you find it looks far tougher and chopper-like and you'll have an even bigger appreciation for it.
I'm 6'3". Have Kuryakyn foward control extensions on my03 Deuce. Also have a Corbin Hollywood solo seat which sits you back another 2 inches or so. I can ride all day, very, very comfortable.
Great to hear from so many tall Deuce riders. I've got a feeling that the bike does have extra appeal to us "tall drinka water" types. Maybe because it is long and skinny. BTW, now that I have seen the new Rocker (A bike resembles a Deuce that was surgically altered by a kindergartener...) I have made up my mind to order an '07 Deuce before they are gone. Thanks for helping me with the decision.
