I was wondering if anyone has purchased a fairing for their Deluxe that mounts using the detachable windshield mounts. My girlfriend has been asking for a radio for the bike for ages, and I don't like the look of the ones that mount to the handlebars or windshields so far, and her getting her own bike argument isn't getting me anywhere.
I have put the detachable backrest, windshield, and easy brackets for my bags so I can load it up, or strip it down depending on the ride, so I don't really want to permanently mount anything to the bike.
Personal reviews and advice is greatly appreciated.
Personally, I've been using earbuds (noise cancelling) with girls on the back. Works well with and without detachable windshield. You can either connect 2 bus to 1 phone; or run them on separate phones.
I've contemplated getting speakers, but didnt want to change the profile on my Fatboy; and I've heard earbuds sound better than speakers at highway speeds.
I contemplated the same scenario a few years ago but ended up going with double Sena setups instead. I have Pandora streaming to the Sena 20s and Shure SE215 noise cancelling earbuds that I can wear with a half helmet or full face. The sound from earbuds is far superior to any windblown speaker setup and you get the benefit of saving your ears from wind noise. The girlfriend has the same setup so we can both have our own music but can still chat as we head down the road. Just my 2 cents...
Memphis Shades has the most inexpensive quick detach batwing fairing, uses thier mounts and on or off in 30 seconds. It is only the outter shell so there are mounts for radios available or you can DIY it. Here is one of the stereo set ups for the MS fairing
My advice is to track down a bike that's got one of the cheaper "shells" installed like Memphis Shades or one of the ebay POS's before you purchase one.
I was fortunate to be able to see two bikes, one that had a simple Memphis Shades shell and one that had a full outfitted fairing (I don't recall the name).
The Memphis Shades might have been fine for wind blockage but it looked awful.
I decided to go all in and get the Reckless Fairing and I have no regrets.
I have the Memphis Shades Detachable Batwing on my 2010 Deluxe. Couldn't be more satisfied with it. I'm in the NH Seacoast if you're in the area and want to check it out.
This is literally the only picture that I have of my bike in its current configuration. The Hoppe Quadzilla has been great except the Eclipse head unit is garbage - I've gone through 2 of them in 4 years.
When I had my softail I had a fairing installed at the 110th anniversary in Wisconsin. They used the quick connect stock mount. It was easy to remove just like the original shield. It was a great improvement over the shield coming home.
