Default Rear Rotor Replacement.

I’ve never had my rear wheel off my 03 Sportster, always took it to my Indy for rear wheel stuff.
Now I have a 2000STC and I still shy away from rear wheel removal because of the reinstall. Never did pulleys or belt tensioning and alignment.

Here’s my question.....installed floating rotor on front wheel with Lyndall pads. Worked right from service manual (and You Tube)
Can I install the new rear rotor by just removing the rear axle enough to remove the old rotor and install the new rotor.
If that doesn’t work plan #2 is take it all apart and put it back with the help of the service manual.
thanks for listening.

Take it apart and repack the bearings!

PLEASE !

Buy 2 new wheel seals

it is not difficult but it is required maintenance

Adding shiny bits is fine but the underlying mechanicals are far more important

jmo

i have the full maintenance records for from the bikes one owner. He was meticulous with maintenance so I’ll look for bearing and seal work.
thanks for the input

I’m ASSUMING a 2000 has the old style bearings?

good practice for those was to SERVICE the bearings at every tire change

the new sealed type would warrant REPLACEMENT if still original and significant mileage

Just me, but I would suggest doing it. If you have the tools it's actually one of the moore simple things to do.
If your not sure, take picture and mark positions of tensioner before removing. Replace the bearings and seals, and torque the rotor properly, using new bolts and the proper threadlocker'
A HD Factory Service Manual is an important tool. Getting your hands dirty is not a sin and actually build more of a bound to the machine than just riding it.
For me I do all my own work, then I have no doubts what I trust going down the road.

Don't touch the axle adjuster bolts and your belt tension and rear wheel alignment won't change.
You can slide the axle out and reinstall it without moving them.

You can still grease a sealed bearing ... it's quite simple really
