Default Value for totalled bike?

Long story short, my wife's Ex husband passed away and we are now in possession of his 2005 Heritage. I have it on a battery charger to see if we can get any juice out of it. What we do know is that he crashed it and received a check from the insurance company, but he must had bought it back because he still had it. Beyond that, I don't even know if it runs. It turns on when connected to battery charger but nothing happens when I try to start it. It's in N but the N light doesn't light up. Clutch in, bike to run and no fuel pump kicks on, no starter noise, nothing. It has a push button key fob, and it disarms, but still nothing. Any ideas?

Would I be better off trying to part the bike out, or sell as-is to someone? It has 53K miles and definitely put away wet and ridden hard. Any money received will get split between the kids so. Any idea of value as-is?

If you have the time and patience, part it out. Selling the fenders, wheels, gas tank and seat will bring more than as is. Lights, horn, controls, shocks, floor boards, buddy pegs, chrome covers, engine parts might add another $1000. It will take time ad patience though. If you just want it to be gone, as is might bring $1,000.

Or take the old one out and get it tested. Also check all the fuses.

Well, playing around with the ignition switch, and that seems to be the issue. If I push it all the way to Run, it's like it's on accessory. If I put it back a hair, the lights come on to start it. Not enough juice from the battery to turn it over though. I'll grab a new battery and see if it starts up.

Cost you nothing, they’re not that complicated trace it out. Hell I’d give you a grand for it. Fix it and ride it like I stole it

First thing you must do is find out what kind of title it has. If it is branded most likely then it is parts bike and what ever someone will pay for parts . 2005 in that shape branded title not worth much . even if you fix it the best it would ever be worth is maybe 50% of the lowest book if you could get someone to pay it.
If it was not totaled then different game. It could be cleaned up and sold. Depending how good a job you do 4-.5000. But it would need to be cleaned up and running well. I would not put a dime in until you are sure she has a clean title.

From your friend in the insurance business - Lets ask the question of why is a vehicle total. The answer is the cost to fix it is more than 'a' not 'the' percentage of vehicle value. Unless the frame is tweeked, this bike looks very easily repairable. I would not part it out. I would clean it up, put in a battery and see what you have. Im fairly certain the title is branded. With that a running bike is worth 3500 to 3900. Parting it out, you're looking at a nightmare of a parade of morons getting on your nerves and may or may not get you to the 3500ish number. Not running, take 2500 and run.

Update: Threw a new battery in it, and she started up. Actually it sounds really nice. Has what appears to be an older power commander and some sort of pipes on it.

We don't know where/if there is a title for it. The State Farm insurance sticker on the windshield says "loss: collision". I am almost certain the title is branded.

I bent the crash bar back and it's all a little more square. The frame looks ok. Handlebars appear a little off center, but will have to ride to confirm. Some scuffs on the upper fairing and cracked windshield looks like a mild crash. My opinion is that he crashed it, took the insurance money ($5K, we found the check) and likely bought the bike back for a fraction of the cost with intention of repairing it if he wasn't already riding it in the mean time. If it wasn't totaled then the $5K could had been for repairs I guess??

I am half tempted to clean it up and get it checked out and keep it and just pay the kids the street value. But, I already have 2 bikes I barely get to ride already and need another toy like I need a hole in the head.
