Default Retro Fitting F/I

I bought a super clean 2001 FXST yesterday. Before going to look at it I assumed it was carb'd because of the year. The seller was the widow of the previous owner and didn't really know too much about it. When I got there and looked it over it had a F/I air cleaner and it sure didn't look like a carb behind it. Then I went to turn on the petcock and there wasn't one. And of course it fired up immediately when I hit the start button.

So I have a 2001 with injection which I'm pretty happy about. I guess the P/O had it converted. Is this an upgrade that is commonly done?

I believe the FXST came with the upgraded Delphi injection in 2001, so probably not a conversion.

I didn't know that. I thought it wasn't until 2007 when they were all f/i. When I added the bike to my insurance it listed it as an FXSTi. So I guess the "i" is for injection?

Nice bike!
Yes, the "I" stand for injection.

The Softail models never had the Magneti Marelli EFI.... Only the Touring bikes had that...

In 2001, the Softails were the first models to get the Delphi EFI system, and it was their first EFI system.

The Touring models still had MM in 2001, and went to the Delphi EFI System in 2002....

PS- IIRC...

EFI (MM) was an option in EVO touring models, starting in 1996.

The Softails got the EFI (Delphi) Option in 2001.

You could get a touring, dyna, or softail with a carb (CV40) or EFI (Delphi) from 2002 through 2006.

In 2007, all twin cams had EFI, the only carbed bike was a Sportster...

In 2008, all Harley models had EFI (Delphi).....

Good information here. I owned a 2001 Road King and it was indeed an MM injected bike. The 2002 Fat Boy that I bought new in April 2002 and still ride to this day is Keihin carbed. It was my understanding that the 2002 model year could be carbed or injected but I never realized that the injection would have been Delphi. I had been told that the MM was a 2001 year only thing but never cared or had a way to verify it seeing that I only had one for a short time.

The MM EFI was actually pretty good in its day... it's just becoming obsolete, as parts are getting hard to find, and people who know how to dial it in are getting even harder to find...

I have a 2001 Springer with a Keihin carb, the CV40.. I believe it is a very unappreciated and underrated carb/...

I had two shovel heads that had the Keihin butterfly carb. Those carbs were often changed out during any mods by many Harley owners. I remember they had a bad reputation. I built my '80 FXS, and went with an SUII Eliminator carb. That bike ran really well....

HD went to the CV40 in 1988, and then in 1989 the CV40 got the accelerator pump and that version was used by HD until the carbs were phased out...

I logged many miles on my '89 EVO Heritage that had a Stage I with CV40 carb... That bike never skipped a beat...

I rebuilt and dialed in the CV40 carb on my '01 Springer, and that thing fires up quickly, and runs really well.... If it were a kick start bike, it would start first kick...!

You will enjoy many miles with your '02 Fatboy... If you didn't know about CV Performance, they have tutorials and parts if you should need to rebuild your carb..

Lots of good info here guys. Thanks.

I was expecting it to be a carb's bike so the F/I is a nice bonus.
