You haven't killed the surface charge from the charger. It's not going to be that high. Reread my most way up there.
Once I get everything back together, I'll connect the battery back up and turning on the switch, makes the light come on. So turning it on then off should be sufficient, correct?
I think I figured it out, I bought a newer primary, chain, compensator, and clutch, from a 2003, I put that clutch in since it came off a 2003 Softail. If you look at the picture they aren't the same.

Yes to kill surface charge. Cranking it and voltage check gives you a crude ballpark on CCA reserve in battery.
That one on right looks like the one out of my 04. Will it even fit behind cover?

It did fit but with very little clearance on the outer primary, and I couldn't get a good adjustment, put it in gear and pull the clutch in the engine would turn over then break free and roll. Just didn't seem right to me, so I decided to compare the two, big difference between the two. As you can see in the picture.

Little clearance in my 04. I made a little bent wire to spin on mouth of cover to check oil. Hard to see it.
When they act like you described, most newbies fail to find no pay before back off. See one a week on here.
Haven't counted the teeth yet, but the height of the 2003 clutch is about a inch taller, compared to the 95. The ring gear sits at a different height then the original with jackshaft engagement. So I will put the original back in since there is no issues with it prior to disassemble.
