Glad it seems to be fixed!
Sounds like it did the sumping thing. No advice on that. I'm not sure you should try to run it (crank it over yes) before the oil is out of the crankcase??? Any opinions on this??

I've read that Softails do this when they sit for awhile, also read that cranking them a few times will usually start pumping it out of the crankcase and back into the tank if that is the case.
This engine top end was completely rebuilt, and has 490 miles on it. Not sure where the oil level was when I parked it and started tearing it down three years ago. Also suppose to check it when it's been running for awhile to get a accurate reading.
Since it hasn't ran, I'm thinking I should spray some more fogging oil in the cylinders to keep the walls and rings lubed.
You mentioned 30 sec. or more cranking. The few softails I've been around would but none of them set 3 yrs.
Any chance someone drained the tank when it was put up for the 3 yrs?
Damn guy your have really hung in there. Great Job

Dan said check the solenoid contacts, I started tearing it apart, and the three bolts weren't very tight and some pitting on contacts. Sanded them down reassemble and bingo, it works, I've turned it over 5 times now.
Nobody that I know drained the tanks, however the gas that was in it smelled like gas not varnish.
Well being a aircraft mechanic, electrician, ecs, avionics, crew chief, on the F-15 Eagle, I knew eventually would be able to fix this simple two cylinder engine. With a little help on the way, the first bike I ever worked on was a 45 trike, my next door neighbor bought that was a basket. I handed him parts and watched him put it together. He sold it and got a 52 pan head basket, again handed him parts. He told me with these the first thing you do is buy the manual. Both bikes were missing a part or two, but we got them running. Also worked on my cousin's 56 Chevy 283 rebuild over the summer of 67...I was 12...

My thoughts are its in the starter. Especially with how it kept cranking.
That solenoid almost has to be hanging up.
Unless the green wire going to the solenoid is staying energized some how.
Not saying that can't happen just not likely in my thoughts .
I have seen folks who unknowingly added a couple of quarts of oil to a sumped softail.
Bout all it did was make a big mess.

This is just an example and I'm not fond of what the wire's look like.
It would be great for some testing.

All you have done was great considering the age of the bike and you certainly have learned this part of your bike well.
