I dropped my FXST off at the dealer today for it's free 1k mile service, and as usual it's never free. I'd already changed the primary and trans lube to Amsoil, so they'll just drop the motoroil, and I specified replacing it with synthetic, which will cost me. 1st point.......no longer free......
I also allowed the service writer to convince me that the map I downloaded form Dynojet is not optimal ( I d/l the map for the big radius pipes and SE air cleaner) and I'd greatly benefit from his $150 custom mapping. They have a dyno and are certified as a dynojet tuning center blah blah blah.......
So my "free" 1st service is gonna cost me $150 plus the upgrade in engine oil to synthetic...
Man those guys are good salespeople......[&:]
I would like to take a look at their custom map when they are done. Then take it it to another dealer and get a custom map done there as well so we can compare it. See what I am getting at. My dealer said the same thing; I am running a map from fuel moto slightly tweaked and it runs great and the plugs look right on to. I told them I would think about it.
Not to sound like a know it all, but why don't you change your on oil and filter? I know 1000 mile is mandatory for warrenty but after I had mine done plus Dyno-Tune also, but at 1800 miles I bought 4 quarts of MOBIL ONE for 'V' TWINS, its at AUTOZONE or PEPBOYS but not siver bottle but black and they kind of hide it from all other oil, I also changed my tranny fluid to MOBIL ONE tranny oil, its 75w 90w, you need to go to dealer and buy the oil filter, get the 5 micron premium filter for synthetic oil and cleans better than 10 micron but does cost more, then get the GOOD filter wrench and the 'O' rings for oil plug and tranny plug, my bike runs so much smoother now and I'm not a WRENCH at all,and when I drained my old oil (800 miles) it was awful nasty looking I do not think they changed my oil but they sure charged me! It's just a good way to know whats in your bike and how it was done, instead of a young kid with a attitude! But you may not want the hassle and money is not a concern to you, and theres nothing wrong with that, I'm not rich so I try to save as much as I can, but the tranny now shifts like butter! NO fishing for neutral! PURPLE HAZE.

Scan back over my original post.......this was my free 1k service. I paid the difference between dino and synthetic oil, they covered the rest. I WILL do my own maintenance in the future.
As far as the custom map goes, it did show rich on the dyno, but they were "unable" to upload a new map due to the pins in the USB port on the PCIII being "damaged" they said. Funny, it's had a USB cable in it one time before, when I uploaded the map I got from V&H's site. I had no trouble with the USB plug at all. I believe the tech damaged the port attemptimg to connect it; it was easir for me, the PCIII was on my desk hooked to my PC, he was fishing around trying to connect it while mounted to the bike. For that matter I don't know how he managed to "look in the port with a flashlight" with it mounted. Anyway, his solution is for me to lie to Dynojet and say the port has never accepted a USB cable and was damaged from the factory, and try to get a replacement. So there it is..............
SORRY MOJO! MY BAD! I have a little A.D.T. and I skip over some things, I apoligize on my over zealous approach, I'm definitely not a wrench but bought a 06 soft tail service manual over 0n E-BAY from Harley dealer up north, brand new still in wrapping for $50.00, and my dealer did not have one and said had to special order it! And with tax and shipping about $72.90, but at 1800 miles I changed from there No name synthtic to Mobil One for 'V' Twins, and oil they said they changed at 1000 miles sure was NASTY looking, I trust myself more than them, and they do not like selling you the 5 Micron filters and wrench, O rings, and what not because they no I'm not going to pay them $200.00 for Oil change and use the Mobil One Tranny oil 75w 90w, I was having problems finding neutral, but not any more, shifts like butter and bike runs a lot cooler with Mobil One, also I felt like I was closer with my bike doing the labor part! And one more trick put a piece of cardboard under your filter and when you un screw it the oil will run down the cardboard and not all over your bike but change oil with it staright up and then tilt it for filter, sorry for jumping the gun on you,and hope everything goes smoothly for you. PURPLE HAZE.

Next time you do that try cutting up a 2 or 3 liter soda bottle to lay underneath the filter.
Its reusable and will do the job as well or better than the cardboard.

Now that's a great tip... I had been thinking about how to do it next time, as I figured that out a little late the first change.
I had thought about paper or light cardboard, but the soda bottle sounds like just the ticket - I could get creativeand shape it just right... thanks!
If you want to get a bit creative with it, try using a heat shrink blower or blow torch on it lightly to reshape it a little.
Just go easy and youâll be OK, go too heavy and it will shrivel up and harden on you.
I used the heat gun on it and it worked perfectly, the second time. J
