went to dealer to find out what they may give me for 05 deluxe, i understand its 2 yr old, i understand its a 88b-5 speed, i understand all about supply and demand, they have the supply, maybe some demand for used, but only wanting to give 11.000 is a bit of a hit upside the head. I paid 19 plus change, added pipes, down load, even more chrome etc... What happen to h-d holding its value, or was i just dreaming.
Like anything else...you can pobably get 3-4 k more if you sell it outright.....but bottom line is HDs don't hold value like they did when the supply was low.
I suspect the change to the 96" motor is dropping the value of the 88 bikes more than usual.Beforethis year, a two year old softail like yours looked just like a new one.Now there is something new and buyers automatically think its better (I'm not saying it is).You could get more selling private or you may be able to ride it a couple more years and still get 11K on a trade-in.
Softail's in particular have taken a bigger hit. Prob due to allot of people selling them to buy Bagger's. I was floored when I started looking to sell my 00 Heritage for that very reason. It's clean, low miles, tons of extras (chrome extras) . . . And worth 13?(maybe) on the open market . . . BS !! I can't afford/justify taking a hit like that even though I bought it (new) 7 1/2 yrs ago. The Bagger's seem to hold their value (a little) better, but the market is flooded w/them now too. I've been told by (3) dealers they'll give me 10 formine on trade in. A buddy of mine just did it. Took the big hit on his Heritage. Cost him 11K out of pocket to "upgrade" to an 07EG Std with a tour pack.
Check the N.A.D.A. price, low retail or high whole sale, then go to hd.trader.com and look at the year and model and miles ETC., and find a in between price for your bike and try to sell there or E-BAY, There are a lot of people who want a good 05 or 06 with low miles than they do not have the heat and 02-sniffers to duck with! GOOD LUCK! PURPLE HAZE.
That trade-in sounds about right. I sold mine off of HD-Trader and I priced it fairly. If you advertise it and price it reasonably (unlike some who think their used Softail are priceless) it will sell and you will do better than a trade in (even considering the taxes saved).
I'm looking right now to purchase another Deluxe (black/white which is why I sold my black) and it amazes me how many bikes owners just price the bike way to high and wonder why they don't sell.
I traded in the Deuce in my signature for my new Softail Custom. I got a little over $14k for mine. It was a 2005 with 6,100 miles on it (I know I didn't have many miles on it, but that was because I was down in Florida for college and didn't have much of a chance to ride). My dad traded in his 2000 Fatboy that had a lot of chrome on it and a custom paintjob as well, and he got $13,700 from the dealer. It had a little over 15,000 miles I think. I would try selling the bike yourself, rather than accepting $11k for it. Or just ride it a while longer. The depreciation has already taken the big hit, so if you decided to trade it in a couple years, you'd probably get the same or close to it.
