Default RE: rain gear question

ORIGINAL: doc_cj

I've used cheap gear and it never seems to last more than a season. I usually get out in the rain 4 or 5 times a year (especially when on a long trip), so I decided a couple years ago to step up to some name brand gear. Now I've got Frogg Toggs ... and they have lasted 3 seasons. I paid $50 for the set and it's been worth it. I would have spent the same $$ buying a cheaper set each year, so I'm happy. Here's what I've got ...

http://store.froggtoggs.com/browse.cfm/4,453.html

The Road Toad model

This looks like a pretty good set to go with. It even mentions that the hood fits under a helmet, so it soundws like they are kinda meant for riding.

New question now .... how do you size them?

If you wear 34x34 jeans and an XL shirt what size raingear do you go with? You want to have enough room to wear a jacket under it don't you?

Thanks guys

I bought a set of these, and have been very happy with them. The pants have heat shields in the legs, and stirrups to hold them down to your boots. They pack into themselves, which creates a ball about 8' across, but flat.

I bought these while away on a trip. They pack into the hood but I separated them and stuffed them into myfork bag! They crush down pretty well and actually fit in that small bag witha little encouragement. I've got the Gray/White version. Space is hard to come byso they are an ideal fix for me. I can carry themall year downhere in SFL with no need for saddle bags.
Nelson Rigg rain gear is less expensive and in my opinion of much better quality tahn anything I tried on at a HD dealer. Vented with hood, boots straps, suppendors, an heatshields. Got mine from: http://mawonline.com/nelson_r.htm#Rain%20gear

I got the VTL700 in orange and black. Best purchase for bike that I have made yet.

No luck with the help on sizing yet huh?

I think I'm going to go to a Harley dealer tonight and try a couple on.

Thanks for the sizing chart Jeff. Just when I though I was just going to pull the trigger and go with an XL set, now you post a sizing chart that shows that maybe a Medor Lg set may be just fine. LOL !!

Anyway ...

I went to a Harley dealer tonight and what a ripp off !! I was told ( by another customer trying raingear on ) that gortex was the way to go. Anything else is just plastic lined and you will sweat up a storm with it on. Sure enough, i looked at some of the harley rainsuits and even though some of them had mesh lining inside, behind the mesh was some sort of plastic. I slipped one on ( a $150.00 jacket ) and withing 5 minutes of wearing it i could feel myself sweat. In all fairness, Im sure anything would have made me sweat, but this just kinda had a "wearing a trashbag" feeling. The groetex stuff that the other guy bought was $175.00 for the jacket and another $150.0 for the pants. Needless to say, I quickly passed on the idea.

I asked this guy about Frog Togs. He said that he had some friends that had them and that the Togs kept them dry and were breathable, but that the Togs kinda blew up like a baloon while riding with them on because of the breathability. Anyone else have this experience?

I'm really leaning towards the Togs. I'm going to call J&P tomorrow and ask about that set as well. I still think that set-up looks pretty decent as well.

just get something more like a bib then pants. Was riding to Canda last month and got caught in rain/sleet and he had the standard riding pants that were water proof. heavy denura material. but got wet around the waist as the water rode up and under the jacket.

I went with a bib style rain gear that I got from a previous job working for a utility. so you cant buy them in stores.. but the bib style looks @#$#@ but it keeps ya dry. on top I wore the HD FXRG leather jacket and ICON standard boots. I was totally dry after 1 hr in pouring down rain traveling at 70 mphs.

Well ... I pulled the trigger and went with the Toggs.

I called J&P and whenI asked if their suit was breathable the guy told me that if I wanted breathable that I'd have to go with Frog Toggs but he warned me that they were about 200 smacks. I politely hung up the phone and orderd the Toggs direct. They should be here hopefully by friday.

Thanks to all of you guy's for your help !! I'll let you know how they are when I get em.
