I purchased and installed my own headers, air cleaner and PC Commander. It is an easy upgrade. Took all of about 3 hours. great way to become aquainted with your bike. Downloaded a map into the commander and off i Went. Spent another $250 for a dyno session which really cleaned up some dead spots.
If I were to do it again i would spend the extra cash on the ThunderMax with the auto Tune. When I first looked at it I didn't realized how cost effective it really is sice you no longer need to pay for Dyno Tuning. What ever you do to your bike it will adjust for it. http://www.thunder-max.com/
The Stealer is relating CRAP! There are lot's of forum members that run Vance & Hines Fuel /Paks. NO dyno needed . It's a plug and play.
Remember the dealer/stealer is trying to SELL you DYNO TIME.
Agreed, my FuelPak has been great. Definitely plug and play. The FuelPak is really for basic stage 1 upgrades. The Racetuner offers more flexibility with more advanced mods (cams, etc.). No need for a dyno with the FuelPak setup. So far so good... [sm=signs003.gif]
Thanks all for your replies. I do plan on doing the pipes and cleaner my self for sure. I just wasnt sure about the SERT. There seems to be advantages to the SERT it how it tunes. If I ever added cams or a 110 kit I wouldnt have to go buy another. Doest the SERT replace the ECM all together or plug in line. I am a bit unclear on that. I know the others are Piggy Back units. I am pleased to hear the SERT comes with pre made maps to install. Easy Crossing if you do not mind sharing a bit more detail. Does HD make it easy to find the correct one or do you have to load different ones to find what works best? My race car tunes with a system that looks just like the screen shots from the SERT system. So that does not intimidate me at all. I would probably still get it dyno tuned but I am sure it would take less time if I already have it up and running.

The sert has a cable at one end that plugs into the ECM. It has another cable on the other end that plugs into your laptop. After connecting the cables you use the laptop with a supplied program to reflash your ECM. Once done, you unplug everything and you're good to go. Nothing stays attached and the ECM is still there. Later, you can plug the SERT and laptop in while riding so you can record ECM data, play it back on your PC so you can determine if you need to tweak your maps. It's a neat feature if you're into playing with the settings. Or you can just tweak the settings and take a test ride without recording. I did some playing with the ECM settings but after 6 months I got my bike dyno tuned by a local indie and he got it running great. And he charged 1/3 of what HD wanted. I just gave him my SERT. I have a a Stage 1 as shown below. I got the SERT because I expect to some engine work in the future.
The SERT map that I used for my 08 Heritage was basically plug-n-play and no piggy back gizmo's, unplugging sensors or running messy wires, just download the map to the ECM and your ready to go, nothing stays on the bike but the map itself, just like the dealer does. There are plenty of maps that come with the 2008 version of the SERT that will accommodate most applications without having the expense of a dyno. Probably the #1 issue when upgrading exhaust and breathers is decel pop but there is a decel enrichment section in the SERT software that you can use to tune the pop out, generally by cutting the numbers in half. When I did my data moderun with my laptop attached the resultant numbers were very close showing the SERT canned map was almost perfect for my bike application. I think the dyno thing is a bit over exaggerated and you can actually do a better job with the data mode section of the software since you are actually dealing with real world conditions as well as your own riding habits, not someone else's. A few 30 minute sessions in data mode with your laptop and you should be fine tuned and having fun while doing it. I paid $280.00 for the new 2008 version of the SERT which does NOT include the serial cables and if your PC doesn't have a serial port you'll need the serial to USB adapter. The only drawback to the SERT is that upon first usage it marries the bikes serial number which is storedsimilar to ROM in the bikes ECM. In short, you can't usethe SERTwith any other bike or future bike you may own, at least until some smart hacker devices a way to circumvent this feature with the SERT. If you ever have to replace the ECM the dealer will have to download the bikes serial number to the new ECM in order to regain usage of the particular SERT.
