DIY Cheap Mods
THIS THREAD is the whole reason I joined the site!
Okay so... Im a novice... I cant weld, paint, wire, or do most anything with power tools without a trip to the ER... but I got sick of a couple of things at the same time...
1. Bolt On Customization with catalog parts
2. Cookie Cutter Bikes with different paint schemes
3. My bike belonging in categories 1 & 2!
So... my new years resolution is to learn to weld and paint and chop the farg out of the sportster gathering dust in the garage!
Until then I decided to pervert my Night Train.... like I said... not for everyone

And no... if you hit the hole with a beanbag you dont win a prize. *sigh*
A piece of Trucker Chrome for the grill of an 18 wheeler $26.00
2 Bullet Lights I had laying around that I had gotten my moneys worth out of $0.00
2 one inch clamps for mounting lights on handlebars from ebay $20.00
2 pipe clamps from home depot for mounting skull $3.00
1 piece of flat aluminum stock from home depot for skull bracket $6.00
1 stainless pipe clamp from home depot $1.29
Random Bolts, Nuts, tape, etc I had laying around.

These pics are from the mock up stage:
Pipe clamps with masking tape inside to protect the chrome and a honkin piece of rubber as a spacer.
The Bar across the middle is flat aluminum stock I cut off with a dremel to length, marked bolt holes and drilled em out.
Used nuts I already had as stand off spacers and wingnuts on the back to secure em.

Again... plenty of random crap crammed inbetween the clamps and the chrome during mock up.

Incredibly hard to get a pic of this thing without nasty light bounce. But you get the idea.
I get more comments over this simple idea than any wild assed paintjob I have ever had.
It cleaned up really nice in the final install if anyone cared to see pics.
Anyway... I have LOTS more El Cheapo Mods in my head.... just need to learn to weld... and run a cutting torch.... and paint.... and... well you get the idea. PLENTY of light for night driving too!

So I got inspired that there is a place to showcase your DIY stuff and decided to follow through with this idea I had for pegs....

Take a Grenade.... a dummy grenade... dummy. Available at my Army/Navy store for 9 bucks.

Pull the pin! At this point you will have 3 seconds to replace it if you are unsure if the grenade is an inert and decomissioned pineapple.... or not.

Remove the spoon if 3 seconds passed without a VERY large bang.

Unscrew the fusing assembly and remove it from the grenade body.

Drill out the fuse assembly with a 5/16ths bit. I used a drill press... feel free to gouge at yours with a handheld and a vice.

Once you drill out the fuse assembly, reinstall to the grenade body. I used some 5/16ths allthread 20 turns per inch (2 bucks at home depot) and slipped it through the fuse assembly and out the decomissioning hole at the bottom.

Wow! What a coincedence! A 5/16ths nut (10 cents at home depot) sits right there in the fuse assembly!

And now the reason for all of this 5/16ths crap...
Kuryakyn part number 8880. 20 bucks. *shrug* got em half off at a shop. Just lucky I guess.
Heres a link if you want.

5/16ths 20 turns per inch happens to be what these particular serrated male adapters require.
So measure a half inch down from the bottom of the pineapple, whack it off with whatever you whack off with. *snicker*
I whacked mine with a dremel.
Screw on the adapter. replace the spoon, thread the pin back in and bend it so it doesnt fall out... slap em on your passenger pegs and deter piggybacking. Enjoy the smiles from cage drivers at redlights.
I will install them on the bike and post pics later this morning.

Dagerazod,
I like the grenade idea, but if I were you I would get rid of the Home Depot threaded rod and use a 5/16"X20 grade 5 or 8 bolt with a grip length (unthreaded section) that will fit through the grenade but still allow you to put a nut where you have it in the fuse assembly.
That kind of threaded rod is very soft and the pressure your going to put on it with your foot (especially when doing a fast or hard stop) it will sooner or later (probably sooner) bend and or break on you.
Using a grade 5 or better yet 8 bolt will go a long way towards keeping things together a LOT longer.

So I took your advice, replaced the allthread with the grade 8's and slapped em on the bike!
Thanks for the input!
Im thinking of drilling out a larger hole in the bottom of the nade so the adapter recesses into the body more. Although... they scream NOT REALLY LIVE ORDINANCE with the adapters hanging out like that... might prevent LEO questions.
Home Depot, Lowes, and Grainger left me hanging on grade 8 bolts... stumbled into this ancient family owned hardware store expecting to find nothing and BAM! Ta Daaaa!

I like it a lot. But I think you might want to rotate the spoons to the front. In back like that is fine, but anyone actually using them is likely to hit them with their feet and bend them out of shape on you. In front they are less likely to be hit or caught on a boot heel.
When do you send them out for Chrome or are you going to powdercoat them 'black'?

As far as powder.... kind of like the au naturale look. And chrome is just more crap to polish.... Id rather ride.
Then I suggest a little OD Green for the spoon. The blue is a dead giveaway its a dummy.
There is always satin finish clearcoat, to keep it 'original' looking.
