Say that again. I don't have the directions. Are you saying to mount them reverse of what is in the pictures posted by AVIATOR (the top bend facing forward instead of towards the tank)?
The photos above by aviator show the correct installation. The "notch" is on the outside, with the outer edges of the wind deflector bent toward the rear as you would expect for an aerodynamic effect.
The installation directions provided by Harley are really poor. What you see in the two diagrams are the aux light bar and the windshield mounting bracket. The windshield mounting bracket is not the deflector. The wind deflector isn't even shown in the two diagrams! If you don't have an aux lightbar, two HD spacers (HD #6645) are needed to make up for the lightbar mount.
These are the softail models from the Harley website that the deflectors will fit:
Fits '86-later FLSTC, FLST, FLSTF and '93-'96 FLSTN models equipped with Harley-DavidsonŽ King-Size Windshield and/or Passing Lamp Kits. (Designed to also fit with accessory 5-gallon Fat Bob gas tanks.) (Does not fit SpringerŽ models.)
Even the photo on the HD website does not show the current wind deflector with the "notch" as shown in aviators photo. Hope this helps.
Yup, I thought they looked kind of dorky at first. Then rode the bike for 5 mins and that thought disappeared. ......... Completely killed the stupid buffering.
In the instructions it States......... "For you Dorks.... please remove before entering Sturgis, as this could lead to serious injury or death"........ I couldn't bring myself to remove them.
I purchased the H-D chrome wind deflectors at the dealer today (Part No. 58125-90B), dealer installed them without a problem on my '09 Heritage, and I then rode in a variety of wind conditions afterward - including 70 mph on the freeway - without the severe head buffeting I had experienced over the weekend. The bike has the stock detachable windshield.
Thanks for all the good input, both on this thread, and on other threads dealing with this issue. At least for me, on my bike, the wind deflectors have eliminated the head/helmet buffeting which was quite pronounced.
John
PS: The notch in the deflectors, which is clearly visible in Aviator's pics (thanks for posting them), precludes any contact at all with the engine guards.
Great photos by aviator and bloomington to show how the wind deflectors are installed with or without the aux light bar. The Dorks will take them off at Sturgis, but we will arrive in better shape...
A picture may help... If you have a Heritage or a bike with the aux driving lights and turn signals, this is how the deflectors mount.
They will mount on a Heritage with the light bar without having to reverse them.
I have an 05 and they mount just fine. They do have to be mounted to the outside of
the windshield grommets and a flat washer between the deflector and the grommet. If your lollipop turn signals are angled toward the back of the light bar they need to be straight.
It looks like from your picture you have them mounted to the inside of the windshield mounting grommets. If you move the deflectors to the outside of the grommets they will work without having to be reversed.
Hope this helps
