They were one of the first things I added to my 07 Heritage. I wish I would have put them on my 99. They stopped the wind buffeting that was about the only thing I didn't enjoy about the ride. My son adapted the touring ones onto his wide glide with the removable windshield and got the same benefit.
My 2000 gets blown all over the road in windy conditions. Is that a function of the solid wheels or the windshield, or both. DO any vendors make a sleeker windshield than just the flat detachable one?
When you get up to speed the solids offer no different wind resistance than spokes or alloy wheels. Nothing is breezing through spokes or solids at 50 MPH. In a crosswind the most effect comes from the area exposed to the wind, i.e. the rider, bike, equipment, and total weight. A Goldwing will get pushed around in a crosswind as well...large fairings, bags, etc. Some windscreens and fairings will cut the forward resistance a bit better than others, but all will suffer from crosswinds. There are many, many opinions on this subject.
The HD wind deflectors help in that they defeat the turbulence coming up from below and buffeting the rider's chest. The effects from a crosswind will be reduced, as you won't have additional chest buffeting, but the crosswind will still effect the bike. If it's just wind coming at you from the front, you will feel a much more stable ride.
There are lots of windscreen and fairing shapes out there. Every manufacturer has a better claim. Here are just a couple.
I had a set of deflectors on my Electra Glide. Now I ride a Fatboy. I've been riding all summer without a windshield so no real need.
Now that it's colder, the shield's on. On the first ride with the shield, it felt horrible. Put a set of deflectors on and now everything's right with the world again.
I think HD should sell the shield and deflector as a package. IMHO, the shield without the deflectors is useless.
I was waiting for the wind deflectors but Kuryakyn sent the wrong model number. They look cool in place and I hope they will help. Yes, they do look better and sleeker than the HD models.
In the old days we called 'em "Beard Savers". They kept your beard from fluffing up. They were always put on baggers. Never saw 'em on FX's or Soft tails. Times are a changing!
