Get a manual and do the service yourself, if you want. If you are capable. You need to keep all your receipts and document tasks performed on the bike (use a marble notebook like kids use for school.) Do everything listed and do it right. Laced wheels need to be checked.

It is'nt just an oil change. I come across too many people "who do their own service" and screw up their bike or do not do what they are supposed to do.

The 1K service is important because that's the break-in period for the motor, trans, and primary. You want to get rid of that fluid in case of any little shavings that may have sheared off during this period. Yeah, some of the other stuff on the list is minor, but it is very important to change the fluids at this time. I take mine to an independent shop. I bring the owner's manual with me and let the mechanic perform everything that's supposed to get attention. He fills out the service record section, and I save the receipts for warranty purposes. And I save a little money.

the 1K service is relatively important, they check all the seals and stuff, this is prob one of the more important ones to have done then any other that follows later

I had harley print out all the service reccords for the bike and there was only the grips, pipes, seat, extras install on it from the day he picked it up and it never went back. When I bought the bike the guy said he had the oil and plugs changed in september
