Ok, just so I get on the same page here. I have an 08' Bones and I want to put the V&H short shots on and that's it, I don't want to change out the AC or anything else. I am guessing from reading here that when I install the pipes, I WILL need the Fuel Pak or some other fuel management system. Is this correct?

I don't have experience with installing a new full exhaust, but from reading this forum religiously about installing pipes, the answer is yes, you will need a fuel pak, PC V, SERT, whatever works for you.

I was looking for a link to an article I read in Iron Horse Mag regarding the changes we make to our bikes. Essentially the article says HD did a great job in performance design on stock engines. In the rpm range we usually ride in, below 4000, the stock air intake and exhaust are fine. Changing exhaust, even to a 2:1, has little impact on seat of the pants riding in those below 4000 rpm ranges. Of course the 4000+ on a high rpm pass manuver the changes are noticeable. The same position was taken on the air intake. They supported this position with dyno run postings. The article did acknowledge the "cool" factor of aftermarket pipes and that "Harley sound." The article also acknowledged the stats are not the same on a built motor....another animal.

Bottom line: put on the slip ons, take the extra money and hit the road and enjoy the trip.

Changing the intake track and filter to any Screaming Eagle product, or Arland Ness Big Gulp system, coupled with a PCV on a 96 cid stock motor, on an 09 model makes a BIG difference when coupled with a performance exhaust system. Top End isn't effected that much but you get there a lot faster. It also makes roll on performance in 5th & 6th down to as low as 2,000 rpm's much better. PC has 12-15 fuel maps already developed for the V already. One of them fit my bike perfectly. Very pleased with the way it runs.

Here is something I found online for full exhaust. I will look and post if I find more useful stuff.

Once you have decided on which chopper motorcycle exhaust system is best for you, experts advise adding three extra components to your installation package. These additional motorcycle parts prevent stains, engine damage and undesirable performance.

First of all it is recommended that you install a fuel management system along with your new motorcycle exhaust system. This allows the airflow and fuel in your pipes to harmonize so that your bike runs smoothly. A fuel management system also prevents your exhaust from deteriorating and turning a brilliant blue. If your bike is fuel injected, you will need to install a type of fuel management system called a power commander. If your bike has a carburetor you will need to install a fuel management system called the jet kit.

Secondly it is recommended that you install new exhaust gaskets every time you replace the motorcycle's exhaust system. This prevents your exhaust from leaking and damaging the engine.

Thirdly it might be a good idea to replace your air cleaner as air is the key to getting more power out of your bike. This also allows for the optimum chemical reactions to take place in your exhaust so your bike can run at optimum efficiency.

I had the dealer install V&H straighshots slip-ons ..on my Heritage ..fuel injected...
the air filter has Screemin' Eagle on it.

several times it has backfired..??
I just bought the bike. When I picked it up they didn't say they had done anything else other than add the slip-ons.

if it ever stops raining..I'll go back and ask them about it.

In the meantime, I'll keep reading what is being said on this post.

Default slip ons

I have an 08 96in SG - Supertrapp SE slip ons/SE Air Cleaner/IED's
Runs great, no backfires, smooth idle, crisp throttle response off idle, runs strong up top. PLugs look ok. Sounds Good too. No complaints. I don't doubt for a minute that I could get a few more HP with a Fuel Mang System but it's not worth the time/$$ to make basically fast enough a little bit faster.
Bottom line - slip ons won't hurt a thing. Go have fun

If you are just going to put on pipes on your 08...you do not need any type of fuel management system

All you guys just putting pipes alone on, do yourself a huge favor and pop an air filer and some kind of fuel management on your bike. Get the V&H fuel pack at the bear minimum, your bike will run and sound much better! Trust me I know!

I went with the SERT and Dynoed, but was expensive ...If was was really watching my pennies I would have done the PCV preconfigured from Fuel moto, or a V&H fuel pack. You can do just pipes alone, but you are really doing yourself and your bike a disservice but not going full Stage 1. IMO
