Default 10,000 mile question

Hi I bought my 01 Fatboy 2 months ago and I just turned 10,000 miles on it. It came without an owners manual. The guy I bought it from said that it had a recent oil change and the oil does look clean, a new back tire. I put in a pep boys battery and the bike does run fine. Is there anything that needs to be done at 10,000 miles? I hate to take it to the dealer and pay for stuff/service I don't need. But than again I don't want to be broke down either. Thanks....

If it was me, I would give it a full service. 10k miles on an '01 bike is low. I would change the oil once a year at least even if the 5k service interval was not reached, so an 8year old bike should have had at least 8 oil changes. Do you trust the previous owner to have done that? Of course I do my own services - I won't pay a stealership for that. Getting a manual to do the job yourself is still cheaper than paying the stealership.

Several things are called for at the 10k mark. Getting ready to do mine now. Steering Head lube and adjustment should probably be at the top of the list

As someone else said, a service manual is your best bet. I'd be lost w/o mine. Or I should say lost more

If the seller had receipts for oil's and filter and seems honest, he probably did it. I was in the same situation as you, seller had receipts and ~1/2 a quart of oil left over from the change - which is typical - so I was comfortable he did the service.

Definitely get a manual. They show up here form time to time for 20-30 bucks.

Yeah def get the manual. I am sure someone here has one handy to let you know what would normally be on the list. if not and I remember I will check this evening at home and let you know what is mentioned for the 10K

My $.02... since you just bought her and she's got some years on her...I'd want to at least let someone that knows more than I do take a good look at the bike and see what small things may be wrong with the bike and tell me exactly what shape she's in. It'll probably turn out that she's in perfect shape, but just to help me sleep better at night, I'd let an indy or HD do the first service and then take over the work myself after that.

I do all my servicing with 1 exception, 10K. Why? I want a second set of eyes to look things over. I use an indy for this, he chuckles when he says "Here for your annual physical?"

go to the dealer and get it all done and they will also check all safety things and then you will have a starting history on a safe bike. think of it as part of the purchase price. may want to include a dyno run just to be sure it is not lean.
