Take your time, if you have a air compressor use it it will pop off the old ones and add the new ones with ease. If not use pacience with removing old ones if stock they might have some light glue type material. When installing new ones if no air put a lil dab or dish soap or liquid hand soad on finger and rub it on the inside of new grip to aid in slidind it on. Don't use too much or they will spin once fully on.
I put ISOs on my Heritage about 5 months ago and really like them... If you are like me and didn't get the throttle boss, I recommend it also. I just put one on mine and it makes the longer trips a little easier on the throttle hand.
For the throttle side, be careful as you work with the cables. They have little round brass doobers on the ends which tend to fall off. No big deal putting them back on, however they are small enough to instantly bounce off and disappear when they hit the concrete. If you lose one, you will be stuck.
For the left side, I took a razor knife with a new blade and sliced my factory grips off flush with the switch housing. Then I ran the blade down the length of the old grip to split it off the handle bar. You then may have some glue residue to clean off the bar. You will leave the old piece of grip in the switch housing to help waterproof it.
for the left side install, you can use the supplied glue or do what I did... I took black electrician tape and "candy-striped" it down the handle bar. Then I worked the grip over the tape. Avoid overlapping the tape edges since it may make it too thick. This method will allow you to remove the grip in the future if need be. My grip will rotate if I apply quite a bit of twist, but does not spin easily.
Then go ride and enjoy... If I remember correctly, my install took me about 1 beer...
Like Edmo says. I put a pair on my Sportster last month. Am thiking of putting grips on my Fatboy, but may go with HD grips.
Pull in the brake and stick a piece of cardboard in there to hold it pulled. This protects the brakelight switch.
The toughtest part I had was getting the throttle cables of and on. I loosened up the adjusters (after marking them to set after grips were installed), but still had a hard time with the cables. I finally opened the throttle and had someone hold it open at the carb, this gave me good slack in the cable without tension so that I could seat it in the new grip.
The easiest way to remove the left grip is to cut it off with a razor. Sand the heck out of the area underneath the grip. Add the glue that comes with, and yes, you will need to use all of it. Putting the new one on is a one shot deal, so make darn sure it is facing the way you want! That CA glue sets real fast (a second or less).
THrottle is real easy IMO. Just follow the instructions that come with the grips.
Make sure to put the right-side on first - so you figure out where the rubber pads are aligned when you're at say 2000 RPM's. Then you'll know where to align the left side.
Take the end caps off and use some lock-tite on the 4 screws , added a throttle boss to mine the other day - looked at the clutch side and the cap is hanging with just one screw in about half way out . Did not notice as my last ride was at night , caught it just in time . I'm sure I could have gotton new end caps at about the price of a new set of grips !
If you have not bought them yet get the ones wth the TBoss , more costly as an after thought plus I could not find anyplace that stocked them as an individual part , ended up ordering online . I'm getting carpal tunnel pretty bad , the TBoss make a real difference . A little tricky to get used to at first - need to watch it as you slow , a slight tendency for some acceleration you don't want !
I put the ISOs on my Sportster. Picked up a pair of HD Braided for my Fatboy this weekend. I know you need to open the switchhousings, but why do you need to mess with the bar clamps? I did nothing with these on the Sporty. New grips are the same size as stock.
