thats a good idea with the coke bottle ...I went with a plastic tray thing like the one found here on ebay although it doesnt get all of the oil....better than a larger mess: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Drag-...Q5fAccessories
have to agree no good way just take it off and use brake cleaner to get rid of the mess - front of engine needs cleaning anyway...
Agreed....I tried the half a bottle trick and a few others, none really worked well(and I have an oil cooler and chin spoiler which makes it even harder)so I just put a good absorbing rag under the oil filter, pull it off as quick as possible to minimize the mess, the rest I just clean up with a degreaser and wash off with a sprayer or hose etc, does just fine.
Dump a rag under the filter before you unscrew the filter, regardless expect to dump some oil on the case. I just go to the local car wash, throw a few quarters in and use the degreaser function on the self sprayer booths then rinse off.
i too go to the car wash but dont trust the degreaser as some will dull and frost any aluminum it touches, black or chrome. i just use the high pressure wash after using the foam brush
Someone on here not too long ago posted a great pic of a way to drain the oil before out of the filter before its removed.
Create a funnel out of cardboard and place it under the filter. Make sure its long enough to go across the engine and drain off into a pan. Then punch a hole in the bottom of the filter. Let it drain, then remove.
I saw this before I changed my oil for the 5000 mile service and i still didn't do it. I made a mess. Next time I will do it this way.
2 holes will work faster, top and bottom, give it an air hole to drain faster...
I was thinking bout drilling them, but this is one time not to go deeeeep....
