Dump a rag under the filter before you unscrew the filter, regardless expect to dump some oil on the case. I just go to the local car wash, throw a few quarters in and use the degreaser function on the self sprayer booths then rinse off.
The best hint I've seen on this forum is cutting out a plastic gallon jug to make a funnel which slides under the filter & drains out into a container. Do a search to see pics of how to cut it. I you get some oil on the case just use a little Dawn & hot water, gone!
I use a Coke or Beer carton, 12 pack works fine, split it open and slip it between the motor and filter. Catches most of the oil and funnels it to my oil drain pan. Some guys split a 2 liter plastic drink bottle but that didn't work for me.
I use a piece of cardboard under the filter. I only got a few drops of oil on the engine, the first few times I changed oil.
The last time I was messier, so I guess practice doesn't make perfect.
I spray break cleaner on the engine to clean off any oil. Does a great job and doesn't leave any residue. The break cleaner that drips on my garage floor eats the paint, but it doesn't effect the paint on the engine.

Someone on here not too long ago posted a great pic of a way to drain the oil before out of the filter before its removed.
Create a funnel out of cardboard and place it under the filter. Make sure its long enough to go across the engine and drain off into a pan. Then punch a hole in the bottom of the filter. Let it drain, then remove.
I saw this before I changed my oil for the 5000 mile service and i still didn't do it. I made a mess. Next time I will do it this way.
I tried the "tin foil" method.....still got oil everywhere. I've tried the "ziplock baggie" method....still got oil everywhere. Next time I'll try the "cardboard box" method....We'll see.
Buy a can of brake cleaner and plan on washing the bike when you're done.
There isn't a way.......just put some speedy dry or rags or newspapers and your drain pan and let it do it's thing. Wash bike afterwards....wah la.....it's clean.
