it should work as the data to the speedo contains much more than speed and zippers sells a speedo tach that has temp and tq and other stuff

I have a 2002 night train and I swapped out the speedo with a combo unit from the dealer; Harley calibrated odometer before shipping out. I run a ThunderMax unit as well and had the same issue you are talking about.

On my bike, I had to hook up a pink wire (Tachometer) that was wire strapped to the rest of the wires at the harness to the speedometer. The wire went to the empty end pin (think it was #6) on the factory harness. You will need to crimp a pin on the end of the pink wire and install in the harness.

Harley says that my tach/speedo is plug and play and it is for the most part except for that pink tach wire.

Newer bikes don't have the same problem with the tach.
They use a data link line instead of a dedicated tach line so all the speedo and tach info is run through a single wire like a serial data line.
