Default New Pipes

I have an 06 FXSTI the dealer sold me a set of V&H Straightshots with a SE air cleaner for EFI motors they told me they have had no problems with just swapping the pipes and the air cleaner that the bike should run just fine. Has anybody done this without a Download or a fuelpak or PC 111 I have installedthe pipes and A/C and so far so good but I want to know if I am doing anylongterm damage? I am not very familiar with the new bikes my last bike was a 78 shovelhead and owned it for almost 20 years so this is all new to me.

First off, nice ride, im partial to black. I would get something, either a download or an aftermarket box. You have to adjust for the extra life that the engine will be getting. Im sure someone else has tried this and can tell ya.

I think the dealer is confusing your FXSTI with an FXD.*. The FXD (Dyna) has a closed loop systems that will automatically adjust the air/fuel for minor modifications. The FXSTI is an open loop system that requires either the HD stage download, SERT, SERF, or aftermarket device to compensate for the modifications you have made to the bike. Not upgrading your fuel map for your modifications will cause your bike to run extremely lean and could result in engine damage. If your bike is under factory warranty, I would go to the dealer that sold you the pipes and air cleaner and ask them to put the statement that the bike needs no download, SERT, SERF, or aftermarket device in writing! That way, when your motor takes a crap, you have something to take to the dealer to support your warranty. Otherwise, you installed the pipes, you modified the bike, you pay for the repair.

I did the same thing on a red 06 standard. Straightshots and SE air cleaner but my dealer told me I HAD to go with a SERT or some type of programer so they could adjust for the new exhaust or it would not run right. Those pipes and the air cleaner are a huge difference from stock, the motor is breathing a lot deeper now. It needs a remap.

BTW, I love the way the straightshots look and sound, and the bike runs just sooooo strong!

Oh, and your pic does not open! Good luck, you have a sweet bike.

I'd be careful with this. Simiar thing happened when I had the dealer where I bought my 05 1200 Custom do stage I. They put on SE II slipons and AC but not Dynojet kit or carb work. Bike coughed once in a while and popped when letting off the throttle. I took it to Boston Harley and they said they would always do a Dynojet kit with Stage I. I had them do it, and the bike runs and sounds great.
