Look into Works shocks. I have read several positive reviews as far as proformance and comfort. Many state they are much better than Progressives. They are on my short list for bike mods.
To ME the 422's are worth the money. Most of my riding is 2-up and we tried to adjust the stock shocks more than once, it didn't help the bottoming out. I broke L5 after hitting a good pot hole. The next week I had 422's put on and have not looked back. The 422's take what we dish out. I go about 220, my wife is 135 and our gear for trips, (Yosemite/Grand Canyon etc) the 422's work for us.
LOL... and you think that 422's will solve your problems? I hear they ride like stock shocks tightened up with lowering bolts in them.
So based on this statement I'm guessing you don't have any experience with the 422's..
Glad you like your air ride but I know plenty of guys that didn't like theirs and took it off.. Like you I don't have any real knowledge though since I don't have an air ride..
Back to the OT.. Keno.. I put the 422's on my ride after I tried the lowering bolts.. Night and day difference between them.. Never ran the 422's at the stock height so I can't tell you the exact difference but I'm real glad I put them on when I lowered mine.. No problems with them either.. Shop around.. I got mine off Ebay (new) for around $350 shipped.. Good luck.

LoL...Your a funny boy aren't you? funny boy...
So your advise to the OP is to buy 422's(lowering shock) Im sure as your experience shows they will give him the smooth ride he's looken for? Don't Fkn think so! As for my experience with the 422's yes you are correct i don't run them and never will. I can't see spending $400.00 for lowering shocks when you can buy bolts for $25.00. I read of many people who say they are $hit. One of my buddies has the 422's on he bounces all over the place. The OP is looken for a nice smooth ride and i'll give my advice once again....Why buy $400.00 Progressive "LOWERING SHOCKS" when only for a few hundred more can get a air ride.
As for you RAIL....you got ripped off! IMO of course.. and your experience..
I have stockers on my 2001 Deuce. It had the air ride when I bought it and that was nothing but a pain in the a$$. leak here, leak there, leak everywhere. So I put the stockers back on, lucky he kept them. I was sold on the 422's until I read some of the reviews here. I come in at a whomping 160 and the stocks ride great. All I need to do is lower it an inch or two. I wrestled with the bolts for the stockers for two days and then never did work right. are there any other options beside buying the 422 just to lower the bike?

HD lowering shocks will lower it an inch. They come stock on Deluxe and SE FB's, cost $350 new and can be found used for $50-$100. Basically the stock shock but already setup to lower the bike. Had them, liked the ride, just scraped more often 2up so removed them. Look in sig link to compare stock and HD lowering shock height.
190 here, daughter's 120, wife's 135. The 422 are awesome, and I wouldn't have a Softail without them. I'm sitting about 1-1/2" lower than stock, and the ride is way better than stock. The trick is finding your preload, and making sure both shocks are adjusted the same. With all respects, anyone who calls the 422s garbage either hasn't had them on a bike, has the bike slammed all the way down, or hasn't figured out the adjustments yet.
Air ride is an expensive, complicated system that as far as I'm concerned doesn't offer the ride or handling that the 422s offer. Without exception, everyone that I know here in the real world that rides more than a couple thousand miles a year has scrapped their air ride and gone back to a standard shock.
