Ok, so I have a '03 FXST -- I understand it has a 5 gallon tank on it. Being new to it, I have to ask...I've noticed when my gauge says I'm near empty, I can only get about 3 gallons of gas into it before it's full. Is this because it has a 2-gallon "reserve"? I haven't had to switch it to reserve yet, but if I do, is the gauge dependent just on the initial 3 gallons of use or will the gauge show it's tru capacity when on reserve? I have a lengthy trip coming up next weekend and want to know what I can get away with between gas stops.
It's because the fuel gauge is a piece of s.... You should be able to get 150 mi easy out of that tank. If you really wanna know strap a full 1-gal tank on somewhere and ride till she quits. Then you'll have a better idea.
LOL...that's almost what I expected to hear. So, does anyone know how many more miles you can get after switching over to reserve? Anyone know how the reserve works? Is it a tank within the tank or is it just a feel good switch to make you think you can go a little farther?
Keep in mind that the Reserve tank only carries about a gallon of gas (maybe more or less depending on the model of bike), so it should get you 20-30 miles, but any more then that and you are definitely pushing your luck! A good test to do is to strap a gas can to the back of your motorcycle or have someone follow you with a gas can in their car while you drive your motorcycle on reserve until it finally dies. That way you will know exactly how many miles you can travel before your out of luck.
I have a 04 std and always go 175 miles before filling up. have gone over 200 when I messed up but don't recomend it. I used to get at least 30/40 miles on reserve but since the tank lift only maybe 10 or so.just reset trip od and go 175 you will be fine
It is probably like the older shutoff valves. It has a tube extending up from the valve with two levels that it draws from depending on which position you have turned on ( On or Reserve ). The on position only lets it draw down so far, then when you turn your reserve on , it lets it draw the rest of the way to the bottom of the tank. All one tank with an equalizer tube running to both sides.
I've gone about 100 mile before RUNNING OUT OF GAS!! Not a good feeling sitting on the side of the Road, had to walk a few mile to get some gas. I check it all the time
I always, repeat always reset my trip meter every time I refuel. Get to know your range, the tank gauge is pessimistic. Plan on refilling around every 150 miles +/- , unless you ride real hard or run real rich or both.
