Default No help from H-D dealers' parts guys!

So I kept an eye on this thread to find out what I could concerning the install of an FLSTSC front fender on a Crossbones. I really want to make this change myself and I already have the fender but no other parts. I have gone to two different H-D dealerships and I hate to say it but neither was of any help. The first said they were "pretty sure it could be done" but then just gave me that deer-in-the-headlights look, offering no insight on HOW it could be done. I asked them if I could browse through their 2007 Softail Parts Manual so I could reference such things as the axle and spacers and they brought me out a 2007 Parts and Accessories catalog instead!

Off I went to a different dealer.

These guys told me that there was NO WAY it could be done without spending a whole bunch of money because you had to change out the sprung fork on the Crossbones in order to fit the fender. When I told them about some of you guys who have done the swap and claim that it is simple, they insisted that you guys have somehow made modifications in order to do it. I finally mentioned that Ole Coyote even posted a parts list from his swap which said NOTHING about changing out the sprung forks. I brought in Ole Coyote's parts list to them today but they still insisted that it can't be done but they are more than happy to sell me whatever parts I want. At least they had their parts manuals available for me to do some research. They chuckled and in the most condescending of tones said "have a ball". When I was done making my comparisons I reported to them that the 07 FLSTSC and 08 FLSTSB were for all intents and purposes, IDENTICAL. They just looked at me with nothing to say.

Bottom line is, I still want to do this change out but I had just a couple more questions that I hope you guys will help out with since the "parts experts" at the dealerships have been of no help.

One difference I did come across when comparing the two front ends was that the right rocker on the FLSTSC is listed as part #46210-05 while the right rocker on the Bones is #46659-08. Don't know how the two really differ as the illustrations for both looked the same. Did you guys who have done the swap have any issues with fitment on the right side rocker? Also, did you guys pretty much do the work yourselves? Other that trying to hold everything in place to bolt it up, do you have any other hints or advice? Anything would be appreciated.

Skeez;
The only thing I did was put the parts on as shown in the blow ups. No mods, no nothin'.
Tell them H-D guys to go F themselves. It's worked out great. Oh, by the way, if you are putting on a fender light, do it BEFORE you put the fender and tire on. Don't ask me how I know, I just do.
PS I think some Indys are a lot smarter than some H-D people.

Roger that on the light. I had already read your previous post on that subject and am keeping that in mind. I'm glad that you are willing to share your experience and not let the rest of us schmoes suffer through it the hard way!

It is really disappointing how fruitless a trip to a dealership can be. They are so quick to sell you something but if you have a question with any depth they are so useless. If it is not something they can look up in the parts and accessories catalog or maybe something they have done themselves, they can't offer any help. What is worse is as I mentioned; when they are so sure that they know something you don't they are quicker to try and make you feel stupid than they are at offering any real help be researching the matter.

Anyway...that is neither here nor there at this point so I will stop now with the dealer-bashing. I just had to get it off my chest. I am just glad you guys are willing to share some info.

Hey O.C.? When you say that you went by the exploded diagram, are you referring to the sort found in the service manuals? If so, what year softail manual did you use to do your mod?

Also, if you don't mind me taking up a bit more of your time; Do you have a fatboy fender on the back of your bike? If so, did you have to modify or change out the plate that is mounted to the fender and then has the computer module mounted to that? Just looking at the two fenders side by side with my stock fender still on the bike, it looks to me like the stock plate on my Bones would not fit into the recessed area on the fatboy fender. Sorry if what I am describing isn't very clear.

skeez, yaa I was referring to the service manual blowups and I believe it was from a 06 or 07manual.
I did have to do some trim work on the fender to make it fit, no big deal. Then I stuffed everything back into it and I do mean stuffed.

Thumbs up Thanks again!

Awesome!

Thanks for all the info. At this point it is going to be a matter of just jumping into the build. First things first. I got to get both fenders painted as the front is a brand new primed fender and the rear is a used '07 Fatboy in pearl black.

Thanks again!

thanks for the list. I went to the stealer and ordered all parts on the list. I think it was like $170.00 after taxes. I'm still looking for the fender lamp and the horn with bracket. Fender is getting painted as we speak and it should all be back on my hands by next week.
BTW Where do I find blow ups pics? Im thinking of doing this myself
Thanks again

They come out of the parts books or repair manual. It's a picture of the front end, with all the parts, that is blown up so you can see everything and where it goes.
