Default Fuel Gage Replacement

I have false fuel gage readings on my 02 Heritage Springer which once led me to run out of gas in the travel lane of RTE 95. My question is how hard is it to replace the whole float thingy or do I have to replace just the gage itself? ...just curious.

The float is in the tank , just take of the center console. You should see a trap door in the top of the tank held down by many small screws. That is where the sending unit is. The guage is very easy to replace. Look under the tank below where the guage is and you will see wires coming out of a pipe about the size of a drinking straw. follow them to the plug under the tank . The guage just pulls straight up out of the tank.

But you need to either remove the wires from the plug or cut the plug off to get them through the 'straw' sized tube.

Amen, the damn things are so notoriously inaccurate I had never bothered to pay a whits worth of attention to it.

Second that on the trip meter. I have the LED gauge and find it says I am empty when I have 70 miles left.
It looks good but I use the trip meter to let me know when to get gas.
The gauge itself is very simple to change, the only hard part is getting to the connector under the tank.

I find my fuel gage just as useful as my horn. Open the tank, maybe the float arm is just hanging up. Should be an easy fix.
