A small cheap battery charger is not the same as the Deltran Battery Tender. A cheap battery charger will overcharge, destroying the battery. The battery tender won't. I don't think the timer is necessary. Most of the time mine has a green light on it, saying it is not charging but the battery is at the right level.

As far as 6v vs 12v: if you have an old bike or some other strange vehicle with a 6v battery then you need the 6v version. 95% of you will need the 12v version. Check the battery label but most likely it is 12v.
