I'm looking to upgrade and I don't know whether to go Dyna, Fatboy or vrod. I currently cruise in the local area and don't travel longer than 2 hours in any direction. But starting this year I will be doing "trips" and I want to find a bike that cruises well but also travels. Any suggestions?
Get a Softail, however the Road Kings are nice. I'm not into bags and windshields. I prefer Deluxe's or Heritage Softails. If your into leaning over and riding uncomfortable the V-rod is for you. If you want a bike that is not as roomy as a Softail get a Dyna. If you want a bike that is comfortable to drive and you can take on trips or around town get a Softail or a Road King.
I know road kings are nice but I like the Softails. I notice that you didn't mention Fatboy so is that because it is really "all show" and "no go" or are you just into the nostalgia look? Also, I'm assuming the 96 cu is the only way to go.
Ive had the luxuary of riding all three youve listed, The vrod is a good around town bike, i wouldnt dare take it on any trips, the softail is a nice bike and i enjoy cruising my brothers softail, but i had a dyna for a short time, wideglide, and i loved riding that bike, it was the best of all worlds in my opinion, but like others have said, its your choice.

Im not making this statement to start an argument with Fatboy owners, Its my Opinion.
Thank you
Fatboys IMHO will need a lot extras added to be a show stopper.
I like Fatboys, however I think their just too plain unless you got the money to put into them. Once you put the money in them they are one of the toughest bikes out there. Make sure you change those hideous solid rims out if you go Fatboy.
Engine size is unimportant, however bigger is better. When I ride a Harley I cruise, if I want fast I'll go buy a crotch rocket.

I went through this a few months ago. I was between the road king, heritage, and electraglide. the heritage won and i couldn't be happier. I found the road king to be a little heavy for quick rides around town, and i'm just not an old man, so the electraglide was out (sry to any of you who have one...) lol. anyways, the heritage just seem to suit me perfect. it's a great bike for a quick trip to the store, or a weeklong run. also, i needed something that was great ridding solo, or two up since the wife rides along sometimes too. but in the end, there will be one harley that catches your eye, and everything else you look at will be comparred to it. oh, and i drove a vrod a few times, not a great bike for much of anything in my opinion, but there are lots of people that love it. hope that helped.
do your self a favor and get a street glide or a ultra classic standard.
try picking up one from 2003-2006.
or look at getting antraded in police bike. .
i have a modified deluxe and having no bags suck at times. the only reason i do not trade mine in i have so much money into it it would not be worth it too me.
get bags and a wind shield you will thank your self later and a nice radio.

I agree the Heritage is a beautiful and great bike. Also the Street glide is awesome.
The older I get and others get it seems people go to baggers or touring models because they offer more comforts and features. My dad started driving full size Cadillacs or Lincolns, when he got older instead of Corvettes or Mustangs. Now I see me probably leaning that way in about 10 more years.
