Default is your engine VIN# on the title?

Good evening all, i was wondering how i can check to see if the motor in a bike i am looking to get is the original motor. is the engine # on the title or does it have part of the frame VIN# in it? the bike is a 2006 softail.

also the guy says its a night train, but i have my doubts because alot of things are spray painted and the cylinders are silver. is there a key digit in the vin # that represents a nightrain. if i get this bike, i will surely purchase a service manual, but before i do, would anyone be able to open up their manual for a 2006 and give me the VIN #code designations so i can figure out what this bike is? thanks!!

yeah thats what i was looking for. thanks so much for the info.
do you know if the engine # has any part of that # or does it have it own #?

also what is the "vin check digit" ?
how could i be sure that the motor in the bike is the original motor for the bike?

VIN on the engine should be the same, it is just abbreviated.

1981 and later

17 digit vin# number on frame. Abbreviated vin# on engine.
Example ,frame # =1HD1BFK11BY127956. Engine # would be BFKB117956.

Here is the explanation of the check digit - it is basically a verifier. http://www.vehicleidentificationnumb...in_detail.html

Good luck, but something about this sounds fishy. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

good info and thankyou very much. it does sound a bit too good to be true, so i want to go prepared. the info you provided as well as brgtr3 was very informative and appreciated. one more question, is that engine VIN# example correct? why would it be out of order like that? seems like it would make more sense to be BFK11B7956.......do you know why it would be out of order like that? i really appreciate your response.
