Does any one know when the first helmet law came into play ? And what state it was..
No one state did, I don't believe, Black Bagger. In 1974, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) introduced their Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218 (FMVSS 218) for Motorcycle Helmets. These strict standards were mandatory for helmet manufacturers and every helmet was required to have a DOT-approved sticker inside.
The Fed's said that if the state(s) wanted Federal funding, they would adhere and make mantantory this standard. But in 1975, for some reason, Congress withdrew the requirement and, within 3 years, half the states had repealed their laws.

thanks for the reply . Very informative info just wondering . Thank you again .
Here in Ky helmet mandatory with permit, not required after you get license. I agree with many who have posted, that it should be the choice of individual. I got a DOT half helmet for christmas, and plan on wearing it most, if not all of the time. We are bordered by states with helmet laws, so i needed one anyway.
I live in Az and its not required here and up until recently I never wore one now I wear 1 all the time!Summers pretty hot here so we'll see how that goes but with all these crazy people driving around and texting on their cell phones its pretty stupid not to wear one
I always wear mine full face modular but thats my choice now that Im retired from Army. In Florida I get some wise *** remarks but its my choice so I dont care what the bar flies say.
This is a great site showing motorcycle statistics where 4,935 riders where killed while riding. http://www.motorcycle-accidents.com/pages/stats.html
