I am looking into getting new pipes for the fatty, and wanted some input. Looking at the Vance & Hines Shortshots.
Will I loose power from these pipes or gain over the stock system?
You should gain power over the SEII system provided you do an EFI remapping. You will need to add the SERT, Power Commander, V&H Fuelpak or some other type of device to adjust the fuel/air mix properly. A download will not do the job.
I was told that a good V&H system could add 3-4 HP over the SEII slipons with the proper Dyno Tune.
Yeah, you'll definately gain something over what's on there. When I did mine V&H Longshot HS pipes, I also got the SE air cleaner and SERT. They did the map when they installed them, and now I'm having them go back and tweak the decel tables since I'm getting serious popping whenever I let off the gas. The pipes sound really nice too. My buddy has a road king with SE slip ons, and after hearing mine, he's going to get a new set of V&H pipes for his...
I have the V&H Big Shot Staggered (see them on Ricks bike pics above). The BSS's have the power chamber crossover...that and the longer length make for great tone and performance...on my bike anyway (04 FatBoy, 95ci kit, 251 midrange cam, HD-Mikuni carb, SE Air intake). I run without the baffles but use forcing cones at the heads for some backpressure. The pipes sound deep and mellow....not harsh. They don't upset the neighbors but the pipes will bark plenty loud if you open the throttle...there will be no mistaking your there from other vehicles. The BSSs' are a little longer than the short shots. You can turn the billets tips down (like Ricks pics) or out in the classic style.
A friend has the short shots on his bike...he regrets not getting the longer length...his pipes sound harsh and backfire frequently. When I was building my bike, I frequently heard that too short or too long pipes don't give the best performance.
Bottom line however is get what you like...you'll be riding it...
Vance&Hines have been making pipes for Harleys almost as long as there have been Harleys to put them on. I have the Big Shot Staggereds and they sound super and had a noticable power gain. The only choice in pipes in my opinion!!!!
