Hey just put hard bags on my deluxe got the bags from Rob,s Used Harley Parts by the way good guy and great to do business with. He sugested I think about a fairing before I paint my bags to match my Bike. My question is a radio would be nice but not a necessity but I would like to hear from anyone who could tell me the different in the wind factor between my large Windshield and a fairing?
The hard bags look great on the bike. If I didn't have high dollar leather Iron Bags on my deluxe I would get hard bags too. In addition I look through my windshiled on my Deluxe and I love having the protection from both bugs, stones and wind with the high windshield, not sure you would get that same protection from a fairing.
Fairings are a lot warmer than just a shield as your hands are protected. The trick with the fairings are getting the right shield configuration for you. Some like me like to look over the shield. You don't get as much protection that way. The guys that like to run a taller shield and look through it rather than over it get more than a windscreen alone.
I have the short height nostalgic windshield and also a memphis shades detachable fairing.
I ran the fairing for about a month and switched back to the windshield until it gets colder. The fairing really cuts the wind down to the point I wanted more when it's over 100 degrees. I have the 5" and 9" windshields on the fairing as well as the lower deflectors, the 5" is great around town but buffeting starts around 65-70 mph and I get smacked in the face with bugs and whatnot, sure does look good though. The 9" works about the same on the freeway as the windshield as far air moving around your head. What I noticed is how much less wind there is around my hands and legs. It is nice not getting hit in the knuckles with rocks.
When I use a windshield or fairing when going a long way or a lot of Fwy. I have a MS Fats Shield 19" (same as a HD Low Profile shield and I have the MS batwing Fairing. The Fairing with the 9" shield cuts all wind for me and I can ride without glasses its doing such a great job but as was said before no wind on the hands and it seems to be more stable in cross winds than a windshield IMO. But it cuts to much IMO in the summer and its hot in my area riding with it so I usually go with out or with the windshield in the hot weather
An observation - if you go with a fairing and decide on taller bars or apes - seems like it will not provide the arm and hand advantages and imo looks kinda funny. The faring arms do not match up with the riders arms, hands and the taller bars grips.
I haved owned a Valkyrie and VTX 1800 with fairings and 3 Harleys with windshields--- fairing wins EVERY TIME!
Call Glenn at Woodys---best fairing on the market at any price. Fairing with Alpine sound system less paint for a tad over $800--but that was about a year ago.
i just got my fairing today from woody and its 1 st class, top notch quality and fits great.and its fiber glass, not plastic.you can get it with or without radio setup.do take a look.
