in case some of you havent seen my introduction post, i currently ride an 04 volusia and an 85 honda bobber. im looking at replacing my volusia next year with something with some more motor. im looking at either a softail of somesort, or a street bob i think. so far, the only ones that look like they will be in my price range are the softail standards with the 88 ci motor and the 5 speed. ive seen them reasonable price around the 2002-2005ish years. im looking at used, price limit right around 10k i think, preferably less haha.
anything i should watch out for in certain years?
are they geared alright for highway driving? my volusia right now screams at 70 mph in 5th gear, desperately needs a 6th gear.
You can find deals out there. I bought my 06 deluxe in feb 2010, It had 1400 miles on it. Practically brand new. Didnt have a scratch on it and was garage kept. I paid 10k for it. It had the 21inch windshield and bags. A Old man had it, and never rode it. Hes a customer of mine, so I made him an offer, and he took it. The only thing is that it sat for over a year. But she rides like a dream. I looked for about 4 months, lookin for a deal. If you look hard enough, theres deals out there bro.
Mine has the 88 with 5 speed, and I dont have any problems running 80 on the interstate. Planning on installin 211 cams and some sreaming eagle parts, but its not for speed its for torque, not top end speed. I want that sound that cams produce, Im 32 and not really into speed anymore since I got rid of my 08 Busa. To many close calls goin way over the speed limit. Now its all about looks and sound. Good luck Bro.
i agree, i sold my f4i a couple years ago. i'm in it for the style and sound and rideability. my volusia isnt cutting it with the 50ci motor, and the 5 speed that has it taching 5000 rpm at 70mph
Good deals are out there. Just wait! A friend got a heritage loaded from a older guy that had it for sale in his yard for $11K and it is one of the nicest ones I have seen to date. Well over 5K or more in good aftermarket stuff. Not kuryakyn but... Ness/PM/RDS/Progressive lowering shocks/Bars/Pipes/tuner/LED and along those lines.
Like they said there are deals out there, especially now that the winter 'not much riding' season is closing in on us up north.
Your just going to have to be a little patient and keep looking.
Not sure what the older 88 inch 5 speeds do at 70, but my 96 inch 6 speed is only turning a lazy 2200/2300rpm at 70.
So you should not have the same kind of annoying high RPM buzzing I had with my old Yamaha 750.
I went from an 07 c50 volusia to an 03 heritage softail its like going to a caddillac will do great on the road i just got back last weekend on a 420 mile ride all interstat ran about 75-80 most of the way.
I looked for months finding one with a 10k budget. I found my 07 FXSTC with 2 months warranty remaining, 13k miles, Stage 1, V&H BRs, H-D soft saddlebags, and a Nelson Rigg cover for 10k. It was filthy and the guy claimed the only time it got washed is when it rained. Took awhile to get her cleaned and looking good again. It has the 96ci, 6spd., and F.I., just as I wanted. I don't use 6th till about 55mph or else it lugs.
As far as the 88 5spd goes, some guys I ride with have them and have no complaints. One with a Fatboy says his really likes cruising at 80mph when he takes trips.
Keep looking, with the economy and weather, you'll find a deal on the bike you want.
fyi: I purchased my 2007 FXST with 3k on the odometer for 10.2k at a dreammachines in Texas (prob 2k+ worth of extras). Unless the Harley used market gets stronger, I think you can get into an 07 next year around the 10k mark. If you have cash, I have heard of individuals selling their Harley's at crazy low prices in the DFW area.
