Looking at HAR-STQ017G GT17 (or 19) for 2010 Softail Custom. I see that the windshield is listed as (3" wider than stock). What is the overall width of this shield? I don't know what your stock width is.

I know to plan on getting a height that is just under line of sight, but there will obviously be times that you are looking through the shield. I wonder if the Recurve feature at the top edge distorts the view at all. Does anybody that uses these shields find the recurve to be annoying to look through?

Does anybody have pros/cons to clear vs. light smoke?

Thanks!
Hi and thanks for the inquiry. Our STQ017G is 24 1/8" across where the mounting holes are. On the height, we recommend being able to look over the shield by 1-1.5" while sitting in a normal position and looking at a reference point about 50' in front of you on the ground. With our recurve design, you'd then be safely looking over the shield, but getting the protection you deserve.

As for distortion with the recurve: We inspect every shield for distortion issues prior to shipping to ensure a "clear view" (pun intended). That being said, whenever you bend plastic, you will have some change in the optics - it is unavoidable. I can tell you that I haven't had any customers return an STQ017G for reasons of distortion - I have only heard positive reviews of the performance and clarity of our shield.

As for tint: Our light grey 3/16" inch material allows 75% light penetration, so it mainly serves to reduce glare from chrome reflection, sun, oncoming headlights, etc. It is light enough so that it is perfectly safe at night.

Hope that helps a bit and I'd be glad to answer any other questions you (or anyone else) has.

Have a great week everybody!

To get an accurate measurement use a 3' level. Hold the level just below your nose out to the tape measure.

My shield is a couple inches below the nose and ride with a 1/2 face helmet, zero wind buffeting.

I'm hoping after talking to Mark at Clearview and listening to his suggestions my new wind shield will cure the problems I'm having.
Also try keeping your knees pressed against the gas tank at higher speeds. And/or wind deflectors.

If your windshield is a quick detach type, you can try pushing the bottom out and giving it more angle into the wind. This can solve buffeting problems (it did for me) but also will cause the windshield top to be effectively lowered due to the angle change. On my standard quick detach windshield I can no longer look through it, even when mounted high on the forks. See the thread here:

Hey Clearview,

Is it possible to order in different widths for the shields. I really don't want it much wider than 20". Would it be a different price for special order?

I still have to figure my height. Its hard because it winter & the bikes in the garage. My driveway & street are both on hills. If I try to take measurements the angle of the forks should be considered, right?

It is my understanding that with this model I also buy the (4) quick clamps from Harley, but don't need anything else?

Thanks

Thanks for the question. We manufacture every windshield by hand so yes, we can customize widths to most custom specs. We do charge a nominal $30 for any custom modifications.

Yes, the angle of the forks should be considered. Also, as to hardware: You would need all the hardware that would come with a stock HD shield...the pieces that fit on the windshield and the pieces that fit the shield to the bike/forks.

Look forward to hearing from you and hope this helps a bit.

Take Care,

WOW Nikon, what a beautiful bike, was that originally a Deluxe?
What kind of backrest is that, it fits the bike perfect!

It sucks you bought a new detachable and now you hate it. My last 3 bikes have all had recurve shields. I cannot deal with looking through a shield especially after the first bug splats on it. I see Clearview responded a great company with a great product I've had 2 of theirs and 1 Windvest based on a thread here for my Roadglide. IMHO both these company's make superior products the other option is Kuryakn/Harley but their more looks than function.
I'd cut the one you have to dial in the height remembering the recurve will give you 2-3" of wind deflection or call the guys at Clearview the owner had me sitting on my bike until we determined the exact height based on my view at certain distances.
