Default What Cam ???

I need to get my cam chain tensioning shoes replaced. 36k on the motor now. I think I'm done pushing it. Anyway I am going to go w/ the hydraulic set up and figured while i was in there i would do a cam also. Now the question is that I really can't afford to do a big bore kit or heads yet, So What cam do you guys think would be a nice happy medium for both set ups (88"&95")??? Just wondering what evryone thinks. Thanks in advance for any input.

In the same boat as you. Can't afford the 107" kit right now. Spoke to Fuel Moto, Hillside and Bob Wood about this and I am going with the Woods TW-555 for the 96". No need to swap the cam later when the 107" is being done. There are tons of cams and cam Co. out there and it will depend on what you are looking to get out of it. Look at the mfg web sites and dyno sheets ask questions, make calls and do your homework.

Toph,

I just ordered the hydraulic up-grade kit myself. Going to replace the system in my 03 Night Train. Here's a few points you don't want to overlook.

1. If you haven't done so already, order a set of adjustable push rods. Makes the job a lot easier.

2. A new set of Lifters should be utilized if installing new Cams.

3. Harley now stocks Timken Style inner cam bearings. HD part number = 24017-10. Sold as a pair for under 20 dollars.

4. The Hydraulic kit does not include the secondary cam chain. Your existing chain can be used but you might consider just replacing it with a new one.

Good Luck

What are you looking to accomplish/expectations with choosing a cam? How do you ride? Answer those two questions, then ask which cam you should be looking for.

But just for shats and giggles, here's a few that will work well in both the 88" & 95" motor.

~Andrews 21/26/37's (again, the way you ride will dictate which will best suit your needs)
~Headquarters 0034
~Crane HTC-300-2/HTC-310-2
~Woods TW6/W7
~Screamin Eagle 203/204
~Dave Mackie TC510 or S&S 510 (I personally like the Mackie's over the S&S's, but to each their own).

My advise, FWIW, is to choose a cam at .510 lift or below since your running stock, '99 casting heads.

I Usually ride pretty hard and usually am loaded down pretty good so I would like to keep the power on the lower to mid. I was thinking the screaming eagle 204. The reason I ask is I get a good discount on SE parts but didnt really know if I should go SE or something other. I am researching it a little bit, but to be honest I need to get this done soon, spring is just around the corner. So I figured I would pick the brains of you folks that have already ben through the rounds of figuring it out.
Olong, Thanks for the heads up. I think you save me a couple of extra trips to te stearlership.

That narrows the choices down to;
~Andrews 21 or 26's
~Headquarters 0034
~Crane HTC-300-2
~Either the SE204 or 203
~Either Dave Mackie or S&S 510's

For torque lower in the RPM range, look for a cam with an early intake valve closing (i.e. 30, 32, 36, or 38 degrees). Advantages to them means your into the cam earlier (1700-2000 rpm). Downside is they start to run out later in the rpm range (4800-5000 rpm). However, most bikes spend their lives in the 1800-4000 rpm range.

To put it another way, with the 3.15 gearing on your bike, in 5th gear, doing 70 mph, you will be at 2900 rpm, and at 100 mph, 4100 rpm. You won't even get to 5000 rpm until 120+ mph.

Just some food for thought.
